Rare Karaoke Songs You Need To Sing ASAP

by Tracy Dye

If you're a frequenter of karaoke nights like I am, you know that some staples can be belted out again and again. After enough libations, more than a few people will try their hand at Adele's "Rolling In The Deep," a group of bros will want to get nostalgic with "500 Miles" by The Proclaimers, and I, personally, choose "Sweet Child Of Mine" by Guns N' Roses as my fallback when one too many rail drinks have hampered my decision-making skills. There are so many hits — both new and old — that make for the perfect karaoke soundtrack, but what about all the underrated gems that continue to go unsung? Being that the volumes they hand out with song selections at karaoke bars are about the size of two phonebooks, there are a ton of rarely selected tracks you and your squad could surprise — and thrill — the crowd with. Even if you have trouble hitting the high notes, people will be so giddy to hear something new, they will have nary a critique.

An added bonus of choosing a rare karaoke song is that — because most people don't know the lyrics — no one will be able to tell whether or not you're completely butchering it. So which little-known tune should you choose during your next karaoke venture? I have seven ideas to get you started.

1. Wheatus "Teenage Dirtbag"

For whatever reason, this gem is a rare feature on karaoke nights. Not only is it sure to be a crowd-pleaser, but the poppy track offers a bit of nostalgia from Jason Bigg's teen movie days.

2. Dan Band "Candy Shop"

If you can find a Dan Band version of this salacious hit from Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, I suggest you select it and sing your heart out — bonus points if you mime Dan's choreography from The Hangover.

3. Kristen Bell & Santino Fontana "Love is an Open Door"

Disney hits are always a go-to when it comes to karaoke. However, "A Whole New World" from Aladdin usually garners the top spot when it comes to duets. Spice things up by trying the glorious "Love is an Open Door" from Frozen on for size.

4. Adele "I Found A Boy"

Other than my friend, Kelsey, who has a voice worthy of a three-chair-turn on The Voice, no one ever sings this song at karaoke. Karaoke goers have likely become accustomed to everyone and their brother belting out their best rendition of "Rolling In The Deep," but some of Adele's underrated tracks go unremittingly unsung. "I Found A Boy" is phenomenal, guys, so give it a freaking go.

5. Maroon 5 "If I Never See Your Face Again"

While everyone else is showing off their "Moves Like Jagger," wow the crowd with this underrated tune.

6. Christina Aguilera "Obvious"

Anyone who is facing — or has faced — the agony of being unsure of how to act in front of a crush can sing out their unrequited sorrows with this early Christina Aguilera track.

7. JC Chasez "All Day Long I Dream About Sex"

I just recently became aware this song existed, thanks to a music video breakdown from Bustle's own Kristie Rohwedder. I officially can't get it out of my head and feel the unyielding urge to belt out this bad boy during my next karaoke endeavor.

Do you feel properly equipped to surprise the crowd during your next karaoke night? Great! Now get out there and sing your respective hearts out, my lovely songbirds!
