11 Plus Size Pieces For This Fall's '70s Trend

by Jodie Layne

There's no doubt about it: Fashion inspired by the '70s is fall 2015's biggest trend. Bell sleeve dressed, flare jeans, fringe, suede, and corduroy are completely dominating every shop window and style blogger's Instagram stream. The good news is that for the first time — in as far back as I can remember — plus size babes have more than their fair share of easily accessible, on-trend items to help them nail this trend.

Call it a sign of the ever-changing plus size clothing landscape or call it a fluke, but plus size retailers seem to have embraced the '70s trend, full stop. Maybe you're looking for a sleek mock turtleneck tunic to add a bit of retro flare to your workwear. Perhaps you've been stockpiling floppy-brimmed hats and heart-shaped sunglasses for a sartorial moment such as this to go full Joplin. Either way, you can probably find just what you're looking for, prompting the older adults in your life to say, "Hey! I remember when that was cool the first time around."

For a decade that was known for its wild proportions, loud patterns, and bold colors, the '70s trend we're seeing this fall is surprisingly wearable. Channel your inner vintage vixen with these 11 pieces that make styling the trend easier than picking something to watch on Netflix.

1. The Jumpsuit

Tie-Front Jumpsuit, $89.90, eloquii.com

Go full-on Band Aid by pairing this with a shearling jacket and wedge heels or go more subtle with a metallic pump and some gorgeous jewelry.

2. The Patterned Flare Pants

Patterned Flared Pants, $14.90, forever21.com

These seem like a whole lot to be wearing in everyday life, but I promise you that they're not as scary as they look. Play them more modern with a blousy, boxy top and and ankle boot if you wish. You can also pair them with a sleeveless mock neck top and a tie wait duster for a more retro vibe. Who knew that patterned flares could be so versatile?

3. The Bell Sleeve Dress

A-Line Bell Sleeve Dress, $40, missguidedus.com

Is there anything cuter for fall than an A-line dress with knee socks and lace-up Oxfords? Think about it and then get back to me.

4. The Printed Top

ASOS Curve Geo Print Top, $54, asos.com

The colors and print of this top are totally throwback-worthy, but the high slit cut is all modern. This is a top that'll easily slide into your work wardrobe to be mixed with basics, or that could go ultra-trendy by being tucked into a tan suede pencil skirt.

5. The Mock Neck Tunic

Mock Neck Tunic, $129, lieslbinx.com

Indie designer Liesl Binx says on her site that she was inspired by The Shining for her fall collection's shoot, but there's nothing scary about this tunic top. The long sleeves, boxy shape, and deep eggplant shade are totally covetable and timeless. Pair this with a loose cocoon coat, jeans, and heeled ankle boots to look sleek and modern or tuck it into flare jeans for an on-trend look.

6. The Printed Trench

Joe Browns Regal Trench, $184.94, simplybe.co.uk

There's no quicker way to punch up your look than a statement trench and I'm in love with the retro vibes that the tapestry on this one gives off. Bonus: It's available up to a size 32! Throw it over a chunky turtleneck with distressed jeans or over a formal dress.

7. Tie Front Maxi

Alice & You Winter Floral Maxi, $73, asos.com

This dress is everything there was to love about the '70s: A psychedelic print, warm colors, and all the room in the legs and sleeves. There's no getting around how blatantly retro this dress is, so just embrace it in all its glory.

8. The Pussybow Blouse

Bow Blouse, $34.99, hm.com

This is a more subtle throwback and will make you feel like late '70s Martha from The Americans. That's a good thing, of course. Play up the "working girl" look with a midi pleated skirt or go breezy Parisian with perfectly tailored jeans, boots with a chunky heel, and a camel coat.

9. The Velvet Mock Neck Dress

Velvet Alba Dress, $308, rachelpally.com

This is the most luxe and sultry version of the '70s trend I've seen this fall and I can't get enough of it. This velvet bodycon would be perfect played up vampy with a glam coat and tons of gold jewelry (think Cookie Lyon). You could also go full Band Aid with it and pair it with a shearling coat and floppy-brimmed hat. Either way, you should probably have it.

10. The Peasant Blouse

Love & Legend Poet Blouse, $70, additionelle.com

This romantic iteration of the typical, embroidered, gauzy peasant blouse is so dreamy. The details here are all on point, from the elastic sleeves to the tie front keyhole neckline. Style this romantic or edgy — the possibilities are endless.

11. The Shawl

Knit Striped Ruana, $59.95, lanebryant.com

Is there anything better than a cozy shawl in the cool fall? Cozy up to this to add some bulk to a retro shift dress or belt it over a turtleneck with wool leggings and boots. Versatile, cozy, affordable — what's not to love?

Brands are finally catering to plus size women when it comes to creating affordable, on-trend items, so embrace it and channel your inner post-counterculture babe.
