John Mayer, Katy Perry, & Some Bull

by Maitri Suhas

Good morning, America: John Mayer and Katy Perry released a music video for their duet "Who You Love" from Mayer's new album Paradise Valley. Not sure why anyone would release a music video after Beyoncé basically destroyed the medium on Friday, but do what you will. Mayer released the video Tuesday morning on Good Morning, America, and BOY is this video bland! It features Mayer and Perry and a bunch of other couples riding a mechanical bull slow-motion in the desert. And then some confetti. And thaaaaat's it, really.

Have to give a begrudging hat tip to Mayer for casting real couples, though, including interracial and same-sex pairs. The lyrics are trés simple but honestly, a nice sentiment: "You love who you love who you love," Perry and Mayer croon to one another in a warm-toned closeup. Awwww, how sweet that he would write the song for her — except that he didn't.

"John Mayer may be singing along with his love Katy Perry in their new duet, “Who You Love,” but Mayer had the song in his head a long before he met Perry and it wasn’t his idea to cast her in the duet." VERY TOUCHING.

Still, it's a sweet thought, even if it is from two people that have been generally sort of jerks this year (and all other years, to be honest); Perry with her geisha gaffe and Mayer with his ... strange sweet nothings.

Oh well. You love who you love, and sometimes you find just the right asshole for you, and you can ride with them on a mechanical bull in the desert, and that's more than I can say for myself. Here's the video:
