Hey, Biebs' New Tattoo: What Do You Mean?

by Daniela Cabrera

Pop stars just aren't as squeaky clean as they used to be. When I was younger, I remember parents being outraged members of *NSYNC or Backstreet Boys for having something as simple as tattoo sleeves or crazy hair colors and piercings. But oh, how the times have changed. Even super sweet boy bands like One Direction and ex-Disney starlets like Miley Cyrus are covered in tattoos and while many can just be random and fun, loads of them can hold very personal meaning to them. Justin Bieber has grown up before our eyes and with many tattoos all over his body, he is a veteran now. Bieber just unveiled a new "purpose" tattoo on his stomach, and his ink seems to hint on his new outlook in life.

Just a few days ago, Bieber unveiled the name of his newest album and the release date of November 13. What could "purpose" mean? Well, if his appearances as of late hint at anything, it might be that Bieber has finally re-focused and found his, well, purpose in life again, which I have to assume is his music, his fans, and bettering himself as an individual. I have to say, I like this Bieber.

This is not the first time that Bieber has marked one of his albums on his body. In 2012, he revealed a "Believe" tattoo he received at Bang Bang Tattoo in NYC. The tat was dedicated to his album and it began the series of inspirational tattoos that would tell a story of Bieber attempting to change his ways for the better. After getting caught in some trouble, Bieber revealed a "Forgive" tattoo on his stomach in 2014, seeming to allude to his Christian faith. He also got "Patience" tattooed behind his ear and neck around this time.

Bieber sure loves his inspirational word tattoos, huh? In March of this year, he told Men's Health for his April cover story, "It's time for me to grow up." He shared that he had plans for his next tattoo, again, something to inspire. He said, "I want 'LL' tatted right here...When you're Low, Lift. Because we often want to keep our heads down. But we should lift our heads." Since then, Bieber got a "G" tattoo for his pastor friends and their daughter, Georgia, who was diagnosed with a rare brain disorder.

Now on the eve of his new album, Purpose, it seems like his tattoos have told the story of his evolution and future. The young star went through some trying times, but is emerging as the star he should have always been. As he said in his monologue during his emotional VMAs performance, "Give in to faith. Believe in something bigger than yourself, and find your purpose." I hope he has finally found his.
