There were a lot of things that happened throughout The Vampire Diaries Season 7 premiere. Alaric is apparently planning to bring Jo back to life; Mystic Falls is now being controlled by Lily's Heretics; and a 3-year TVD flash forward promises a dark and morbid future. However, there was something else that was constantly looming at the forefront of every character's mind: Elena. As proven by the many different journal entries we see throughout the episode, our beloved Miss Gilbert has been sorely missed since she hunkered down for her long nap. So could that mean that there's a chance Elena will wake up on TVD at some point anytime in the near future? Unfortunately, the answer to that question is plain and simple: nope.
As Kai explained in the Season 5 finale, Elena and Bonnie's lives are now linked to one another, which means that Elena will only be able to awaken when Bonnie dies. And given that Nina Dobrev has made it clear that she has no intention of returning to The CW series anytime soon, I think Bonnie's life is pretty secure for the time being. As much as Damon misses Elena, he would never let anything happen to his best friend, which means we all have to start getting used to living in a Elena-less world, whether we like it or not.
Do I miss Delena? Of course I do. But I have to admit that I am looking forward to seeing how these characters function without her at the center of it all. And as much as her departure sucks, at least we know it's only temporary. Sure, we may never actually witness her waking up, but just knowing that she eventually will is certainly better than nothing.
