Goosebumps, the big screen adaptation of the beloved, spooky children's series, is hitting theaters on Friday, Oct. 16, just in time to freak us all out during Halloween season. Odds are, if you're a '90s kid, or a fan of horror in general, you're excited for this movie. Goosebumps is a meta take on R.L. Stine's classic book series, which totaled 62 works released between 1992-1997. In the film, star Jack Black plays a fictionalized version of Stine, the odd author-turned-teacher who, along with his teenage daughter Hannah (Odeya Rush), catches the eye of his new neighbor, Zach (Dylan Minnette). In the world of the movie, Zach and his friend accidentally bring Stine's scary Goosebumps monsters to life. The family-friendly horror/comedy is sure to court a wide audience, from kids looking for a scare to adults looking for some nostalgic fun. Given its large appeal, it's no wonder people are already wondering, will Goosebumps get a sequel?
As it stands now, prior to the film's release, Sony, the studio behind the adaptation, already has their eye on a Goosebumps 2. According to reports, a Goosebumps sequel is allegedly currently in early development, with Sony reportedly looking for a writer to pen the script. Though the sequel is only speculative at this point, it's safe to say that, should Goosebumps have a successful run at the box office, a sequel could very well be on its way.
Goosebumps 2 may not yet be confirmed, but stars Minnette, Rush and Black are reportedly already signed on for multiple films. According to TMZ, both Minnette and Rush could potentially see their salaries double if a sequel, as well as a third movie, both happen. Given the positive buzz surrounding Goosebumps, it's more than likely that Goosebumps will turn into a franchise. But because Goosebumps chose not to follow the storylines from the anthology series, what would a Goosebumps sequel even be about?
Luckily, Goosebumps 2 has plenty of material to work with. Though Goosebumps crams in at least 25 references to the book series — meaning a few dozen terrifying creatures and monsters — that still leaves over 30 books' worth of material left for a potential sequel. Not to mention the fact that Stine's Goosebumps series led to multiple spin-off series and even more books.
There's no doubt that Stine has imagined enough monsters to keep audiences screaming for a long time, but, as always with Hollywood, any potential sequels will depend on the Goosebumps box office. Still, if I had to bet on it, I'd put money on a Goosebumps 2.
