If you've spent any time on the internet yet today, you're probably wondering: what is the song in the trailer for Captain America: Civil War ? I know I am, because anything that can put me in floor-to-ceiling goosebumps for three consecutive watchings of a trailer before I even notice really knows what it's doing. The melody felt familiar to me, but I couldn't quite put my finger on why, and there were no lyrics to help guide me to an answer, so I had to do some digging around online for answers. And it turns out, if you don't recognize the song that's backing the trailer, you're not crazy, so don't worry: it's entirely new music, and you were never going to come up with that answer on your own.
But on the other side, if you didn't recognize the tune, you also don't need to worry, because as it turns out, while Captain America: Civil War will have a completely original score, it's composed by Henry Jackman in order to sound very similar to music we've already heard. Jackman also tackled the score for Captain America: Winter Soldier , and he's said that the original will serve as a jumping off point for the sequel; the phrasing The Hollywood Reporteruses in their interview with Jackman is "similar with a twist". Which totally makes sense to me! In hindsight, the haunting, foreboding tracks in the trailer are definitely "similar with a twist" to those from Winter Soldier — see if you have the same response by watching the trailer below.
Well? Do you feel less crazy now? I'm personally relieved not to be struggling any more with the conundrum, "I've definitely never heard this before, but I know it somehow!" Phew. Let's all meet back up here on May 6, 2016, when Captain America: Civil War hits theaters to decide whether Jackman pulls it off. (I'm betting he does, if the trailer is any indication!)
