Whether or not you remember Cruel Intentions as a film you loved to hate, or hated to love, you have to admit that Sarah Michelle Gellar's character Kathryn Merteuil was a boss — albeit terrifying — 17-year-old socialite. Like, in 1999, she actually made me afraid to grow up (true story). Why? Because she was just so. Damn. Cruel. But now, in some unsurprising twist of fate, the people behind the Cruel Intentions TV reboot, which was just greenlit to pilot, want Kathryn back. And they won't settle for anyone other than Sarah Michelle Gellar to play her. (Or, at least, they shouldn't.)
According to Deadline, the Cruel Intentions TV reboot will center around Kathryn up to her same old tricks. That is, screwing with the life of her step-brother (even posthumously) — through his now teenage son. Sounds like a promising enough idea, but will Gellar go for it? According to Deadline, Gellar is considering the series, so with that in mind, I'm going to make one final declarative statement: she needs to. No, really. In order for this to work, Sarah Michelle Gellar has reprise her role as Kathryn. Here's why.
1. We Need Her Honesty
So transparent. So real.
2. No One Else Gives Advice Like Her
Or, you know, don't. You do you.
3. She's A Good Kisser?
The now-infamous Central Park kiss!
4. Her Confidence is Admirable
5. Her Insults Are Key
Simple and to the point.
6. Who Else Will Always Have A Glass of Champagne On Hand?
Wait, she's how old in this film? Why is she always perched on some Victorian piece of furniture with a flute of bubbly delicately held in her hand verbalizing the cruelest of intentions? When I was 17, I was like, watching The O.C. with a milkshake.
7. She's Perfected The Art Of Seduction
PER. FECTED. Also, shout out to the power suit. Pretty sure it's like noon o'clock over there.
8. And The Single Tear
Puts LC's to shame.
9. She's A Generous Lover
10. No Really, Her Insults Are On Point
What does it even mean to be a chump? Is this '90s slang I have since erased from my vocabulary/memory?
11. THIS Attitude
THIS. It's everything we know and love about Kathryn, dipped in some dope progressivism.
Sarah Michelle Gellar, the Cruel Intentions reboot won't be the same without you as Kathryn. It really, really won't.
