'00s Fashion Trends That Are Going To Be Big Again

by Melodi Erdogan

With the way that fashion works, there's no doubt a few trends from the early '00s will be big again in 2016. Now that the '90s, with all its grunge flannel and chokers, have had their moment (OK, that moment is still going on) the timeline only points forward to classic trends from the '00s every millennial knows and loves. From popcorn shirts to trucker hats, it's only a matter of time before these fashion trends have a resurgence.

There's a part of me that wishes I could forget all about the looks I wore in the '00s, but another part of me that finds those same pieces to be cool even still. Trucker hats, mini skirts, and velour track suits are all things I loved growing up, and I'm sure a lot of millennials could resonate with that sentiment. And even though these items have long been forgotten, I have a feeling they may just make another appearance in the style-sphere once again. And this time, they'll be better than ever.

So, here are 13 '00s fashion trends that will inevitably be hot soon. After all, what's old will always become new again. So dust off your shrugs and studded belts, because you may just be needing them in your wardrobe again soon.

1. Low Rise Denim

Low-rise jeans could be making a come back on the heels of all those high-waisted silhouettes. I honestly would not be surprised in the slightest if style stars like Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid started rocking this style with heels and crop tops very soon.

2. Bedazzling

Back in the '00s, anything that could be bedazzled was bedazzled. I'm no psychic, but bedazzling may just be upon us once again. Be prepared to stick rhinestones to your purse, the back pocket of your jeans (low-rise, that is), and even the front of your favorite graphic tees. Don't even lie, you kinda missed this look, didn't you?

3. Trucker Hats

I can just imagine a Simple Life reunion season where Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie not only revisit their fondest memories from the show, but also rock all those crazy outfits. I hope you saved that Von Dutch, because trucker hats are probably going to be cool again.

4. Denim Mini Skirts

Denim mini skirts are coming back, baby! The button-front versions have been taking over for a few seasons now, but I predict the classic denim mini skirt, with frayed edges and a low-rise silhouette, might be resurfacing soon too. This trend could definitely work alongside current favorites like flat forms and colorful prints.

5. Polo Shirts

There's no doubt that polo shirts are more '00s prep school than 2016 street style chic, but that's not to say the look couldn't work today. In fact, there's a good chance that if the athleisure and glam styles die down, the preppy fashions could move in. And before you know it, polos will be everywhere.

6. Shrugs

As a millennial, I obviously rocked a shrug on more than one occasion growing up. And I can honestly say I would still sport one if they came back into style today. Imagine a knit shrug over a basic white tank top, or paired with high-waisted jeans? There's no denying the shrug is an easy, wearable layer.

7. Studded Belts

I would argue these never went out of style to begin with. That being said, if a celebrity or musician starts wearing one a la Avril Lavigne in the early '00s, I have no doubt everyone will rush to their local Hot Topic store to buy a brand new studded belt. I wouldn't as much as blink an eye if I saw one on a style star like Kylie Jenner.

8. Boot Cut Jeans

I have no doubt in my mind that boot cut jeans will also come back in style soon following the wave of mega wide-legged jeans.

9. Deep V-Neck T-Shirts

Get ready to rock that cleveage in a low V-neck T-shirt. I predict that bloggers, editors, and models alike will be rocking the '00s look by next fashion week.

10. Popcorn Shirts

Popcorn shirts will make all our middle school memories come back to haunt — I mean, delight — us. OK. Fine. I think we could totally do without a revival of popcorn shirts. But that doesn't mean they're not going to come back into style anyways. Thanks for that, fashion.

Don't be surprised if you see these '00s trends coming back within the next couple of seasons. Try not to cringe at boot cut, and be open to rocking a popcorn shirt once again. What's old always becomes new again.
