What To Watch If You're Over Waiting For More 'GG'

by Emily Lackey

I don’t think there’s anyone in the world that gets more excited for some juicy Gilmore Girls revival news than I do. But on the back end of all that excitement is a little bit of anxiety. Because most days, thinking and writing about the Gilmore Girls revival feels a lot like waiting for Christmas. And, you guys, I am terrible at waiting for Christmas. So, call it an act of self-care, call it an act of frustrated protest, but the thing that I’ve been doing lately to cope is watching these things on Netflix to help me get through waiting for the Gilmore Girls revival.

It’s the least I can do, really, as I wait for all four episodes of the revival to premiere on Netflix hopefully sometime this year. Because as I very impatiently sit back and twiddle my thumbs, I may as well do something to keep my eyes busy. So lately I’ve taken to marathoning all of the shows and movies that either feature Gilmore Girls cast members or in some way remind me of the original series. It’s not a perfect solution, but so far it’s enough to get me through the past few months of waiting.

Here’s hoping this list of things to watch while I wait for the Gilmore Girls revival to premiere gets me through.

1. Parenthood

The obvious next step. It’s like methadone for those Gilmore Girls withdrawals.

2. D.U.F.F.

Mae Whitman, who starred as Lauren Graham's daughter in Parenthood, may as well be one of the Gilmore Girls, if you ask me.

3. Nightwatch

Want to see Lauren Graham before she was adorable? Too bad. There’s no such thing. But you can see her before she became the world’s best mother in this late ‘90s thriller.

4. The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants

Where Alexis Bledel went to make her mark on the big screen.

5. Price Check

See Edward Herrmann in all of his post-Gilmore glory in this fun comedy starring Parker Posey.

6. The Factory

A little off-genre, but this movie stars Whitman too.

7. The Secret Life Of The American Teenager

This show provides just the perfect amount of teenage angst to tide you over.

8. The Very Thought Of You

Consider this another six degrees of Gilmore Girls separation. Monica Potter was in Parenthood with Graham, so that totally counts.

9. Heroes

Starring Jess (aka Milo Ventimiglia) himself.

10. Roseanne

Did you know Amy Sherman-Palladino was originally a writer for Roseanne? No wonder why I loved that show so much.

11. Gilmore Girls

This goes without saying, no? All seven seasons are there. You may as well start from the beginning and hope you don’t run out by the end of the summer.

12. Erin Brockovich

Sure, it's a little grittier, but this movie about a single mom trying to make it on her own will give you all of those Gilmore feels.

13. First Position

It's similar to Bunheads, Amy Sherman-Palladino's other hit show about young dancers! Can't go wrong.

14. Pretty Ugly People

If you can't wait for Sookie to make her official return to Stars Hollow, check her out in this 2009 comedy.

15. How To Get Away With Murder

Liza Weil plays a much more refined character in this hit ABC drama, but there are still hints of the old Paris in there.

16. Boys Of Abu Ghraib

OK, fine. This is so far from Gilmore Girls it hurts a little to suggest it. But anything with Scott Patterson in it should be added to the list, no questions asked.

I think if you combined the air times, this list would probably take you until at least September. And, who knows, the revival may be streaming by then.
