Kim Kardashian Gets Real About Gun Control

On early Sunday morning, a gunman opened fire at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando. The tragedy became the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. Following the heartbreaking news, celebrities have spoken out on Twitter, expressing sympathy for the victims and urging politicians to take action regarding gun control. On Sunday, Kim Kardashian posted a series of tweets about gun laws, which were rather eye-opening. Although people are quick to dismiss Kardashian as just another reality star, her words matter more than you may think. She wrote,

Under current federal law people on terror watch lists can legally buy guns – this is called the Terror Gap. We have repeatedly called on Congress to close this loophole that makes it easy for dangerous people to get guns & kill. Nothing has changed!!!! People continue to senselessly die. When will these gun laws be changed?!?!?!?!!!!?????

Considering the 35-year-old has 45.9 million followers on Twitter, her words have power. Her influence extends beyond Yeezy Boosts or the Kimoji app. She's speaking about subjects of substance, and in the process, helping people learn a thing or two about gun control. As informed as I'd like to think I am, I didn't even know the specifics of the Terror Gap. If Kardashian even opens a few eyes and inspires people to speak out and contact congress, then that proves her words have power.

Of course, celebrities aren't politicians, but that doesn't mean they can't help spark change in America. Especially when they have such widespread influence and can encourage their fans to take action. On June 2, Kardashian joined other celebs, like Amy Schumer and Troian Bellisario, in wearing orange to support National Gun Violence Awareness Day. The Keeping Up With The Kardashians star wrote on Instagram, "Wore my new Yeezy Season 2 heels with an orange Pablo shirt yesterday in support of gun violence awareness day. Something has to change."

The fact that Kardashian has repeatedly spoken out against gun violence shows she's committed to the cause. You may have mixed feelings about the star herself, but there's certainly power in raising her voice. Props to her for doing so, and helping educate fans in the process.
