Amber Rose's Comments About Kim K Aren't Cool

by Jamie Primeau

Just when you thought Amber Rose and Kim Kardashian were going to get matching BFF heart necklaces, one of them seems to have shattered that illusion of friendship. Not to sound dramatic, but after Rose's recent comments about Kardashian, I highly doubt they'll be besties. In an interview with the New York Daily News, Rose commented on Kardashian's rise to fame and dissed her family in the process. She told the publication, "Let’s face it. The only reason these girls have a career is because their older sister had a little fun on tape." Yikes. Is it just me or does that sound like an insult?

Soon after the aforementioned news began to spread, Rose quoted a tweet from Perez Hilton and wrote, "Wtf?! Y'all really want me and Kim to feud huh? Well It's not gonna happen #FakeStory #GirlPower."

Bustle has reached out to Rose and the New York Daily News for comment, but has not yet heard back.

Since the Daily News did attribute the quote to Rose, it's unclear what part is "fake" here. Were her comments taken out of context? Or perhaps she didn't realize the problem in making such a statement. Maybe she just means she wasn't trying to restart their feud. Regardless, the notion that the Kardashian family is famous solely because of Kardashian's sex tape is nothing new — but it is problematic. Sure, her name first got circulated when that notorious tape with Ray J leaked in 2007, but if that's the only reason anyone cared about her, she wouldn't have millions of fans, 11 seasons of a reality show, multiple successful apps, and various other business ventures. I'm exhausted even just listing her accomplishments.

To say Kardashian is only famous because of her sex tape is as insulting as saying Rose is only famous because of the men she's been with. (Rose first arrived on red carpets when she dated Kanye West and later Wiz Khalifa.) Yet to associate someone solely by who they've slept with undermines their agency as an individual, and really, it's just not fair. Let's not categorize women in that way.

Seemingly contradicting her point about Kardashian's fame, Rose described her upcoming radio station to The Daily News and said, "I definitely wanted a platform to talk about ‘sex-positive’ and other issues to show people who I really am." I don't doubt her sincerity about being sex-positive, but why diminish all that Kardashian has done down to one sex tape? She's so much more than her sexuality and shouldn't be pigeonholed because of it.

Overall, this whole situation is puzzling, considering the two seemingly buried their beef months ago. Rose and Kardashian took a selfie together, and in an interview, Rose said they text all the time. She later corrected herself and said they never really talk. So quite frankly, I do not understand their relationship. But I'd love if they could just keep getting along and being friendly. The less drama, the better.
