8 Signs You're Meant To Be On Team Valor

by Eliza Castile

So you've given in to peer pressure and downloaded "Pokemon Go," only to find that it's just as addicting as everyone claimed. After a series of level-ups, you're faced with the same choice that has ruined relationships and turned player against player: Joining a team. Of course, if you're fortunate enough to possess the signs you're definitely Team Valor, it probably wasn't much of a contest. The red team may not be as overwhelmingly popular as Team Boring — excuse me, Team Mystic — but that doesn't mean it's not destined for greatness. Besides, what we lack in numbers, we more than make up for in sheer force of will.

That being said, it's always best to make an informed decision. First of all, it's worth noting that the teams don't affect your gameplay in any way, so the decision comes down to personal preferences. Aside from Team Valor, your other (clearly inferior) options are Team Mystic, aka the blue team, and Team Instinct, aka the yellow team. Mystic is led by Professor Willow's intellectual assistant Blanche, who believes analysis and research is the key to becoming the Very Best. (She also wears a super cool trench coat.) Instinct, on the other hand, is led by the vaguely New Age-y assistant Spark; accordingly, the team's philosophy emphasizes intuition and Feelings.

Team Valor is led by Willow's third assistant, Candela. I'll let her explain the team's philosophy:

Pokemon are stronger than humans, and they’re warmhearted too! I’m researching ways to enhance Pokemon’s natural power in the pursuit of true strength. There’s no doubt that the Pokemon our team have trained are the strongest in battle! Are you ready?

If her words made you want to fist pump and shirk all responsibilities to catch Pokemon, you're destined for Team Valor. If you need a little more convincing, though, check out eight other signs you're meant to join the red team.

1. You Like To Get Things Done

Of all the teams, Valor is the one that prefers tangible results. While Team Mystic may be happy with their intellectual pursuits and Team Valor is off trying to read their Pokemon's minds, Team Valor is out there training all day, erry day.

2. You're Willing To Go To Great Lengths To Capture A Gym

Team Valor's defining characteristic is its work ethic; you don't get to be the most powerful team by laying around and talking. If waking up at 3 a.m. to capture a gym while its masters are asleep sounds like a perfectly reasonable plan, the red team is where you're meant to be.

3. You're Super Competitive

Not as competitive as I am, obviously, but you might come close. There's a reason the red team is so strict (some might say obsessive) in its training schedule; unlike the cooperative Team Instinct and research-oriented Team Mystic, Team Valor is all about crushing the opposition and becoming the strongest group of Pokemasters around.

4. You're Passionate

If you tend to get a little too into things, Team Valor will welcome you with open, overly enthusiastic arms.

5. You're A Bit Of A Pyromaniac

Team Valor's mascot is the firebird Moltres. Need I say more?

6. Your Harry Potter House Is Gryffindor

Like many rivalries in pop culture, the three teams ended up roughly corresponding to Hogwarts houses: Intuitive Team Instinct is Hufflepuff, wise Team Mystic is Ravenclaw, and brave Team Valor is Gryffindor, although the case could be made that its cunning tactics make the red team a good fit for Slytherin as well.

7. You Work Well With Others

Valor may be ultra-competitive, but that doesn't mean its players aren't capable of working together. Since "Pokemon Go" was released, Valor has gotten a reputation for coordinated attacks taking over gyms at landmarks like the Empire State Building and the Pentagon.

8. You Want To Be The Very Best

If you want to be the Very Best, capital letters very much included, Team Valor is the obvious choice. Now go out and catch 'em all.
