At any given moment, on any given day, I can guarantee you that I am thinking one of two things: either "I'm hungry," or "I wish I was in my bed watching a movie right now." And right now, you're thinking the exact same thing. How do I know? There's a reason Netflix and chill is a thing — because everyone loves movies, and everyone loves "chill." And at any given moment, we're all wishing we were watching a movie instead of doing whatever it is we're doing. Whether it's because life is too dull, hard, or muggle-heavy, there's always a good reason to escape the world for a few hours with a good film. In the spirit of this desperate desire and need, I have put together a list of the best movies to watch on Netflix when you just want to be alone and escape the world.
Whenever I get the urge to lock myself up in my room and watch a movie by myself, I tend to gravitate towards a few types of movies: the heartwarming, cry your heart out kind, the intellectual documentary kind, or the kind that will completely transport me into another reality (preferably one with magic). These 17 best movies to watch on Netflix when you just want to be alone are a mixture of both.
1. Batkid Begins
This documentary will make you feel all of the emotions and probably make you cry all of the tears. In a good way.
Stardust is a rare gem that will transport you from your tiny bedroom to a fairytale land where shooting stars are magical and Robert De Niro is a crossdressing pirate.
3. Jane Eyre
Period films are always great to watch solo — mostly because they tend to be about pretty lonely, independent characters. Jane Eyre is really the story of one woman finding her place in a lonely world, making it a perfect accompaniment to a lonely evening. Plus there's Michael Fassbender.
4. Moonrise Kingdom
Wes Anderson's touching story of young love is as much about friendship and love as it is about imagination. In other words: get ready to have some pretty wild dreams.
5. In Your Eyes
In Your Eyes is a kind of fantastic love story that is about how people can be together and alone at the same time. Which, if you're looking to lock yourself away for the night with nothing but a movie to keep you company, is probably exactly what you're looking for.
6. Fruitvale Station
Fruitvale Station is definitely more of an emotionally taxing movie than any other on this list, and it can be tough to watch alone. However, it's also a movie that requires as much silence from the audience as possible. So, if your friends are talkers, it's best experienced alone.
Because nothing else says a night by yourself like a dark comedy about a man who kills his wife, and is congratulated by his neighbors.
8. Charlie's Angels
Honestly, does anything sound better than a night spent curled up on your couch with a glass of wine and Charlie's Angels and literally nothing else?
9. To Catch A Thief
Ok, you want to spend the night alone, but you know what's even better than a night by yourself? A night with Cary Grant.
Pleasantville will bring you into a fantasy world while also making you think hard about the world we're in. It's a nice, introspective and beautiful movie — perfect for a night in.
Frank, like Jane Eyre, is another movie that will let you spend time alone, but also with Michael Fassbender.
If you're in the mood for some quiet soul searching, then Pariah will definitely help get you there on your night in.
13. The Thin Blue Line
Want to spend your night looking at a true crime story, but not watching cheesy reality shows? The Thin Blue Line's got you covered. (Trust me on this one.)
14. The Princess Bride
When is watching The Princess Bride not a good idea?
15. Larry Crowne
Tom Hanks co-wrote and directed this perfectly lovable comedy about a middle-aged man who goes to community college. Perfect for a night in, Larry Crowne is thoroughly enjoyable (its cast includes Hanks, Julia Roberts, Randall Park, Rob Riggle, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Rami Malek and George Takei) and it won't make you think too hard.
16. V For Vendetta
V For Vendetta might seem a little heavy to watch by yourself, but the experience will probably make you feel ready to start a revolution, so, there's that.
17. Galaxy Quest
If you're looking for laughs, look no further. Galaxy Quest is a love letter to fandoms so pure and charming, you'll never want to stop watching it.
