Taylor Swift May Have Written About Tom Hiddleston
To be perfectly honest, I've never been completely certain that Taylor Swift's relationship with Tom Hiddleston was real or some weird staged thing in Hollywood. But as a Swiftie, I have to consider all the options and there's a lot of considering to do, since news broke that Swift actually penned Little Big Town's new hit, "Better Man." Since she's known for writing songs by drawing from personal experience, fans simply must figure out who she was referencing — especially because this is the only new Swift music in far too long. A lot of fans are assuming the song was written with Calvin Harris in mind, but Tom Hiddleston is an interesting dark horse candidate.
On Tuesday, Little Big Town revealed Swift's authorship of their hit song on a Facebook Live Q&A session. Band member Karen Fairchild told fans they didn't "blab" about Swift's involvement when the song was first released, because they didn't want the news to take away from the lyrics — they didn't even tell their label. Swift, who has been friends with Little Big Town since high school, pitched the already written song to the band and they immediately jumped on it because it "felt special."
But most importantly, is Little Big Town's single about Hiddleston? The pair first met in May when they memorably danced at the Met Ball. Swift and Calvin Harris broke up in June, and later that month, she and Hiddleston started dating and traveling the entire world together. Then, the whole thing ended in September. Based on timing and how long it takes to produce a song, it could really go either way — Hiddleston or Harris. Maybe Little Big Town quickly banged out a hit single right after Swift wrote it in September? It's possible.
When Us Weekly broke the news about the end of Hiddleswift, they reported the split happened because, as a source put it, "Tom wanted the relationship to be more public than she [Taylor] was comfortable with. Taylor knew the backlash that comes with public displays of affection but Tom didn't listen to her concerns when she brought them up." Could the lyrics "I hold onto this pride because these days it’s all I have" be speaking to this privacy issue? What about "And I gave you my best and we both know you can’t say that?" But I can't imagine Hiddleston not giving 110 percent to something. After all, he's a flawless, gorgeous, perfect human (in my opinion, at least).
Based on the lyrics, Swift is talking about a breakup that feels like a fresh wound. She wrote, "Sometimes, in the middle of the night I can feel you again / But I just miss you, and I just wish you were a better man." Swift definitely hung out with Tom Hiddleston a whole bunch during their short love spree as they gallivanted to Rome, the U.K. (to meet Hiddlemother), Australia, and many other places. It makes sense she would miss him next to her and occasionally have a bad case of the phantom limb Tom.
When Harris and Swift's split was announced, it was reported to be an amicable breakup. No one is exactly sure about Swift and Hiddleston's. With lines like "Wonder what we would’ve become / If you were a better man / We might still be in love / If you were a better man" it certainly seems like the breakup wasn't amicable. Perhaps Hiddleswift's wasn't?
Fans may never know who Little Big Town's hit song is about. What I do know is that it's a great song to angry cry to post-breakup. Hopefully soon there will be some new Swift music, but until then, "Better Man" on repeat, y'all.
