This Year's Most Popular Halloween Costumes Are...

As it turns out, no matter how many creative Halloween costume ideas we try to come up with, the good people of the Internet can't seem to get past the ol' classics. Yahoo's list of most searched for Halloween costumes is out, and the results are, well, pretty boring, with "Ninja Turtle Costume" taking the number one spot. Apparently, people also still need to do a web search for "Minnie Mouse Costume" and "Tinkerbell Costume" to know what those timeless characters look like, and it looks like they still want to dress up as them too, even though we now have more interesting, creative, and well-rounded options like Princess Bubblegum from Adventure Time, or Tina Belcher from Bob's Burgers, or even Derek Zoolander.

After TMNT, the next five most popular costumes were "Pirate Costume" (really, people? Not even a specific pirate?), "Star Wars Costume," "Poison Ivy Costume," "Superhero Costume," and "Catwoman Costume." These are only marginally less interesting than Yahoo's most searched for costumes in 2013, which included "Dominatrix Costume" and "Zombie Costume." I think it's safe to say that an alien visiting Earth from another planet would be forced to conclude that society has continued on a downward, less interesting trajectory, with no new characters and a general lack of creativity. And based on these Halloween choices, they would be correct.

Of course, none of this is to say that you shouldn't do you for Halloween and dress in whatever makes you happy and comfortable. But as you reach for that witch hat you've had lying around since approximately 4th grade, just remember that Halloween only happens one day every year, and there is a world of weird, spooky, and creative possibilities for costumes that haven't been done a million times before. Still looking for a last minute outfit? Not to worry — we have you covered.
