The Paparazzi & Kids Debate: Kourtney vs. Kim

by Christine DiStasio

I can't say I'm surprised that Kim Kardashian has already taught her daughter the art of the perfect selfie-face. I mean, Kim is releasing a selfie book, after all. But, I was surprised on Wednesday morning, when Kim Kardashian tweeted two new selfies with North West, that the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star has taught North how to pose for paparazzi photos. Especially when you consider how viciously Kanye West hates paparazzi in general, but even more so when it comes to his daughter, and how fellow Kardashian mom, Kourtney, is anti-paparazzi when it comes to Penelope and Mason Disick. How does Kim's approach differ from her husband and sister's?

Kim's new photos aren't trying to make a statement about her views on paparazzi and children — they're trying to debunk the kind-of-mean comments that North West never smiles. The first photo shows North and Kim laughing, which is supposed to represent how they act behind closed doors and the second photo shows North with a blue steel "paparazzi-face." Kim doesn't confirm whether or not North's face is one that she's taught her or one that's supposed to demonstrate the fear a child feels while being surrounded by flashing lights. But, she does pose an interesting question about how she feels about paparazzi being around North — especially when, again, she's surrounded by family who are strictly opposed.

So, what exactly are Kim's views on the paparazzi presence in North's life versus Kourtney's?

Kim's Taking The "Zen" Approach

Kim told Paper magazine, in the accompanying interview to her infamous #BreakTheInternet spread:

I couldn't really pick out our pumpkins, and [North] couldn't really enjoy it. You just have to not care. You just have to say, 'This is our life, and it is what it is.'

And then elaborated on her constant, relentless fame:

There's nothing we can do that's not documented, so why not look your best, and amazing?

Basically, Kim is extremely zen about the entire situation with her crazy fame. She knows that it's there and that it's not going away and that it'll ultimately effect North's childhood. But she doesn't plan on letting it ruin North's childhood — which, we can assume, is the reason behind the the "paparazzi-face" Twitter photo. If Kim can make North laugh about it, perhaps there's a lesser chance that she'll grow up fearful of the constant cameras in her face.

Kourtney's Ready To Not Be Famous Anymore

Kourtney regularly shares adorable photos of Penelope and Mason on her Instagram account, but she's totally not down with the paparazzi in her life. Not even a little bit. Aside from her aforementioned terrifying encounter (Kourtney was essentially cornered by photographers while shopping with Penelope) and subsequent freak-out, in a deleted scene from the Kourtney & Khloe Take the Hamptons premiere Kourtney revealed that she wants to move because of paparazzi. Kourtney told Khloe in the scene:

I am going to move someday into a small town. Someday I'm going to move to, like, Georgia or somewhere — to a small town where there are spooky cemeteries, cool churches, and no paparazzi.

Sure, she says "someday," and she might mean when the Kardashian name is no longer a big deal (even though I don't think that'll ever happen). But, the fact that no paparazzi being able to find her is factoring into her decision to run away to a small town is a pretty big deal. Kourtney's 100 percent not about embracing the cameras in her face or in the faces of her children and she shouldn't have to, especially with a super-negative experience under her belt.
