The Most Memorable Celebrity Outfits of 2014

by Hayli Goode

Celebrities seemed to have upped their red carpet and street style outfit choices in 2014. Rihanna officially became a fashion icon. Taylor taught us how to leave the gym. Mom jeans came back in style with help from Leandra Madine. And we mourned the death of a fashion icon.

After the Christmas decorations are put away, the tree is gone and the lights are taken down, the vibe of the season turns to a time of reflection. Did I accomplish all of my resolutions? Is there anything I can accomplish in the next two(ish) weeks? What resolutions am I going to set for myself next year? And, most importantly, what did I learn this year?

Looking back at pictures of friends and myself from the beginning of the year to today always proves that style choices can change in just 365 days. And always offers a good laugh.

To help you remember both the good times, the bad times and the sad times of fashion this year, I put together a list of the best looks in 2014 — one for each month of the year. Time for a little short-term nostalgia.

Pharrell made Grammy history this year sporting a hat designed by Vivienne Westwood on the red carpet. Comparable to the Arby’s logo, Pharrell told MTV the hat was actually inspired by Malcom McLaren’s 1982 music video ”Buffalo Girls.” Now its #trending.

This photo may not have been taken in 2014, but instead of making us all jealous with pictures of her love or pretty roses, British model and actress Suki Waterhouse posted this #tbt on Valentine's Day, proving she’s been wishing all of her fans a happy holiday since her teen years.

Jennifer Lawrence had big shoes to fill at this year’s Academy Awards. If you remember, last year the Hunger Games actress fell walking up the stairs to accept her Oscar for Best Actress. She appeared more graceful than ever in this red Dior Couture dress with diamonds seemingly dripping down her back. And don’t worry, this year she fell before she got inside.

Lupita Nyong’o turned heads the 2014 MTV Music Awards with this colorful Chanel dress. Between the ropes, shapes, colors, pleats, shoulders, and neck, there’s a lot happening here. And I’m pretty sure no one else could have pulled it off but Nyong’o.

The Met Gala is known to bring out the craziest celeb fashion choices. This year, Janelle Monae seemed to channel that crazy into quite an elegant, but risky, fashion choice. Monae sported a red and black Tadashi Shoji cape with matching lips. The singer completed the look with a high-neck blouse, pleated back pants and statement heels. This is how the Met Gala should be done.

June

It was the year of Taylor Swift looking flawless under any condition. Here, you see Swift leaving the gym. That's right. Leaving. The. Gym. She is why life isn't fair.

July

2014 saw one of the greatest comebacks in fashion history: overalls. Gwen Stefani showed off a particularly adorable way to style them for July 4 this year. I was a little skeptical of this trend myself, but after buying a pair for myself, I completely understand. So comfortable.

At the 2014 Emmy Awards, Heidi Klum wore a statement dress designed by then Project Runway contestant Sean Kelly. At first glance, the dress seems like a mere beautifully draped dress, but the real show started when she spun. Even Tim Gunn told her she “made it work.”

September

Rihanna was seen at the LAX airport covered this DKNY sweater onesie, beating out all other fashion tips for traveling in style.

October

You thought Taylor Swift won Halloween, but I’m not sure you actually saw Roberto Cavalli. On the day that allows you to dress up like anything you want, this fashion designer decided to go as Karl Lagerfeld, another fashion designer. Trippy, I know. Cavalli reportedly told The Hunger Magazine, “Just because you are an artist doesn’t mean you have to look like that. Karl Lagerfeld looks ridiculous.” I’m not sure who looks more ridiculous…

On November 28, Leandra Madine, founder of the fashion blog Manrepeller, posted a picture of her wearing “bad jeans.” They were designed by Rachel Comey, high waisted and shorter than her ankles. A week later, Madine wrote a blog on her site titled ”Why I wear Bad Pants.” In the article, she stated despite the negative comments she received on her post, she loves the pants because they make her feel like a better version of herself. Honestly, I’d choose these over skinny jeans any day.

How could we even have a top fashion list without including Lady Gaga? Just two weeks ago, Gaga showed us she was in the holiday spirit by stepping out dressed as an...ice queen? Let's not forget her Christmas outfit last year. Her choice may be more sophisticated this year, but those diamond eyebrows match her metallic shadow perfectly. And I have to say, I was starting to miss her original outfits.
