How Many Tattoos Does Katy Perry Have?

by Arielle Dachille

Knowing Katy Perry as the kitsch-monster that she is, one would expect her to have a bunch of permanent doodles of anthropomorphized food all over her body. So, it only makes sense to ask, how many tattoos does Katy Perry have? As of Sunday, the tally has gone up.

On the heels of her inaugural Super Bowl performance at Super Bowl XLIX on Sunday night, Perry inked XLIX on her ring finger. Right before taking the body art plunge, the "Dark Horse" singer shared a picture of herself under the tattoo needle on Instagram with the caption, "Thought it would be appropriate to draw blood tonight. XLIX." Later on, she posted a picture of the final product, a simple black rendering of the number "49" in Roman Numerals to celebrate her half-time performance. Personally, I would've opted for a dancing shark or a doodle of the Transformer-style lion that she rode into the stadium, but that's just me.

This most recent ink brings Katy Perry's tattoo count to eight tattoos. Full disclosure: this tally only includes visible tats that are known to us plebs in the public. Here are all of the tattoos that we know Katy Perry to have, excluding any private-area ink that may or may not have to do with candy or Orientalism.

It's no secret that Perry has a rather religious upbringing, so the meaning of this particular tattoo is pretty self-explanatory. Her mom and dad were both pastors, and she sang Christian music at the outset of her career. Thus, it's no surprise that Perry wanted to ink the name of her original home boy on her person.

If we learned anything from Perry's Super Bowl performance, it's that she really loves anthropomorphized objects. On her Twitter in July 2009, Perry announced her intention to get a smiling strawberry as her second tattoo, saying "I wanna get a cartoon-ish strawberry to celebrate this amazeballs past 15 months." Just the year before, Perry released her breakout album One of the Boys , so this little doodle can be considered an homage to that album.

Sanskrit Phrase On Right Bicep

Doesn't she just love herself some everyday cultural appropriation? In June 2010, Perry got the phrase "go with the flow" sketched onto her left bicep in the ancient language of Sanskrit. Her then fiancé, Russell Brand, got the same tattoo following their engagement in Jaipur, India, according to PopStarTats.com. When the couple filed for divorce in 2012, Brand reportedly had the ink removed. That's almost as harsh as his chosen break-up method: text message.

To mirror the strawberry tattoo on her left ankle, Perry got a smiling peppermint wheel on her right one in November 2011. She got this around the time of Teenage Dream, so it's thought of as a reference to the candy motif of the album. To continue the cartoon-treat pattern, maybe she'll get the twerking ice cream cone from "This Is How We Do" immortalized on her foot in the coming year.

In January 2012, Perry got a discrete black-and-white lotus flower tattooed on the inside of her right wrist. The Buddhist meaning of this symbolic bud refers to rising above adversity to achieve enlightenment. Given that she got this tattoo just after Brand texted her about his intention to divorce her, I'm guessing that this ink was meant to signify her moving on from smelly boys.

Hello Kitty Tattoo On Right Middle Finger

Circa her 30th Birthday in October 2014, Perry inked a image of her favorite Sanrio character on her right middle finger. Way to juxtapose hard and soft, Katy...

Super Bowl Tattoo On Her Right Ring Finger

This one's as fresh as it can get. Perry got her most recent ink on Sunday night to commemorate the career milestone of her first Super Bowl performance. Having your skin burned off is definitely an interesting way to unwind from that kind of excitement, but to each his own!
