She's More Popular Than Justin Bieber

by Alanna Bennett

Call it Justin Bieber being seen exiting a Brazilian brothel, call it Katy Perry speaking out against the long-standing trope of pop stars stripping, but Katy Perry has now surpassed Justin Bieber as the most-followed person on Twitter.

If you want the numbers: Perry is currently at 46,534,966 followers (probably going up every minute), while Bieber is trailing behind at a paltry 46,510,838. Meanwhile I've been stuck in the 400s for months. It is also being estimated that Perry will be the first to reach 50 million followers.

Isn't it weird, the era that we live in? Where the popularity of pop stars can be measured by the number of people who clicked "follow" on a social media site?

This isn't the first time in recent history that Perry has beaten her pop rivals and made her way to the top — just last week her new album Prism knocked Miley Cyrus' Bangerz out of first place, and a couple months back her single "Roar" did the same to Robin Thicke's summer Goliath "Blurred Lines."

Seems like the girl's doing pretty well for herself — which makes sense if you consider her brilliant new marketing strategy. And we'd be remiss if we didn't mention girl-power here. Go Katy, go.
