Relive The 8 Most Stylish BET Awards Performances

by Marc Cuenco

Even though its unfairly underrated compared to the Grammys and the MTV Video Music Awards, the most fashionable BET Awards performances help make the annual ceremony one of the most exciting shows to watch. The 15-year-strong BET Awards has had its fair share of best and worst moments, both on the red carpet and on the awards podium, but there's simply no denying the awesomeness of various musical performances throughout the show's history. Fashionably speaking, the BET Awards isn't just a show that reunites artists responsible for our childhood jams. It has also brought an eclectic mix of high fashion and street style on one stage.

The 2014 BET Awards brought out hit makers and stylish stars, including Pharrell (with surprise guest Missy Elliott), John Legend, Jhene Aiko, and Best Female Hip-Hop Artist winner Nicki Minaj. The latter looked every bit the biker warrior/goddess during her performance of "Chi-Raq" and "Pills N Potions" in a gold chainmail top, leather skirt, and gladiator boots. Ten years before her, pop legend and comeback queen Janet Jackson was the epitome of urban chic while wearing a jersey tank and baggy yellow trousers during her performance. During the decade between MInaj and Jackson's appearances, the BET Awards also delivered showstopping moments from Rihanna, Jennifer Hudson, and a trio of iconic female rappers.

This year's BET Awards is already shaping up to be another must-watch event, thanks to its crop of stylish nominees and presenters, including Rihanna, FKA Twigs, and Zendaya . With just days away from the big show, let's take a look back at some of the most unforgettable and fashionable performances:

1. Brandy, MC Lyte, Yo Yo, and Queen Latifah - 2014

This 2014 performance of Brandy's "I Wanna Be Down" remix proved to be one unforgettable hip-hop summit that brought back three legendary MCs.

2. Missy Elliott Featuring Ciara and Fat Man Scoop - 2005

The rapper's energetic, space-age style performance (with the help of her bestie CiCi) brought the house down, built it back up, and then slayed it again.

3. John Legend and Jhene Aiko - 2014

John's jacket and Jhene's minimalist chic was stripped down R&B perfection.

4. Janet Jackson - 2004

Miss Jackson schooled the audience with her performance of "All Nite (Don't Stop)" and "R&B Junkie" that included a wind tunnel (a la Alexander McQueen's Fall 2003 runway show) and some classic Janet choreography.

5. Jennifer Hudson - 2014

The amazing J-Hud "Walks It Out" in a body positive leather mini and boots.

6. Rihanna - 2013

The singer performed a medley of her hits, complete with one costume change and a Drake cameo. Then Kanye comes out. Rihanna is a mic drop in human form.

7. Pharrell featuring Missy Elliott - 2014

I would like to enroll in #BAEUniversity if Pharrell and Missy were my professors. For life.

8. Nicki Minaj - 2014

Nicki's hypnotic medley of "Chi Raq" and "Pills N Potions" had an Alice in Wonderland meets the Electric Daisy Carnival vibe.
