Quiz: 'Friends' Or 'How I Met Your Mother' Quote?

by Tracy Dye

As a child of the '90s (OK, I was born in 1985, but whatever), I grew up enamored with the sitcom Friends, a show that spawned a ton of laughs and A-List careers (hi, Jennifer Aniston). When the series ended in 2004, I was obviously crushed to bid my favorite sextet adieu. Thankfully, the beloved sitcom known as How I Met Your Mother premiered in 2005, and the empty spot in my heart left by my estranged Friends was full once more. Of course, HIMYM ended its nine season run in 2014, but thanks to things like Netflix, I can re-watch both series at my leisure. Seriously, guys, is it possible to ever get sick of binge-watching these shows? I submit that it is not. Being that both comedy series featured an ensemble of friends, were master purveyors of wit, and focused on the intricacies of relationships, it may seem easy to compare the two. Upon closer inspection, however, one will find that both shows were very unique.

While Friends focused on the dynamic of its six main characters, HIMYM was helmed by Ted Mosby's journey to find the mother of his children, with each episode known to hoodwink the audience in some way. Still, both sitcoms featured story arcs that could be equal parts hilarious and heart-wrenching, all the while being threaded by an ongoing theme of navigating one's way through the trials of adulthood. I guess you could say they're the same but different? Did that make sense? I digress...

We could compare and contrast Friends and HIMYM all day, but one thing we can all agree on is this: both shows were indisputably legen — wait for it — dary! Legendary! Seriously, could these sitcoms be any more watchable? And yes, I just weaved Barney Stinson and Chandler Bing references into two sentences. BOOM! Along with being equally amazing, both Friends and HIMYM are arguably two of the most quotable series of the past two decades. Do you consider yourself an avid fan of both shows? If so, you probably feel you could decipher between a Friends quote and a HIMYM quote no problem. Taken out of context, however, matching some of the most memorable quotes to the correct show can be trickier than it seems. Are you up for the challenge? OK then! Get your pens and notepads ready, and test your sitcom knowledge with this quotable quiz.

"Okay, pep talk! You can do this, but to be more accurate, you probably can't. You're way out of practice and she's way too hot for you. So, remember, it's not about scoring. It's about believing you can do it, even though you probably can't. Go get 'em, tiger!"
