9 Book Characters You'd Swipe Right For

Every book nerd has at least one or two book crushes she holds dear. Which literary heroes you'd swipe right for depends on your taste in both books and romantic partners, of course, but there are a few we can all agree on.

Before we start looking at literary heroes' amazing dating profiles, let me lay out a few ground rules for this post. As much as we all loved Harry Potter's classmates and the Baudelaire siblings, it would be hella weird to run into them on Tinder. Because, you know, they'd be kids. And as much as I'd like to include a whole bunch of Jane Austen characters here, I had to draw the line somewhere, and that somewhere was two.

Also, I hate to break it to you, but if the literary hero you desperately want to match with on Tinder is super obscure — yes, I'm looking at you, fellow Snape lovers — you probably won't find that character here. Please feel free to write your own lengthy odes to Starbuck, Serena, and John Galt, however, because no one's trying to stop you from loving even your most problematic book crush; I have more than a few of my own.

If your favorite literary hero didn't make the cut here, share them on Twitter! Seriously. Inquiring minds want to know who other people would swipe right for, especially those of us who love the nearly unlovable.

1. Jay Gatsby from The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Jay, 32, West Egg

I was in the drug business and then I was in the oil business. But I'm not in either one now. Single and looking to mingle. Just moved to West Egg and I am living the American Dream, old sport.

2. Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Lizzie, 20, Meryton

Feminist. Book Lover. Chill. I pride myself on my discernment and candor. You are a gentleman; I am a gentleman's daughter; so far we are equal.

3. Lisbeth Salander from the Millennium Series by Stieg Larsson

Lisbeth, 24, Stockholm

Bisexual freelancer located in Sodermalm. I enjoy seclusion, so I don't intend to be up your ass 24/7. Would appreciate it if you were as considerate.

4. Sam Spade from The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett

Sam, 35, San Francisco

I like straightforward people, so don't play coy. After all, if you actually were as innocent as you pretend to be, we'd never get anywhere.

5. Janie Mae Crawford from Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston

Janie, 27, Eatonville

Loves: flowers, pear trees, being a free spirit. Hates: violence, dishonesty, commitment-phobes.

6. Bill Weasley from the Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling

Bill, 26, London

Adventurous archaeologist looking for a loyal partner to share in the magic of life. Don't mind the scar, but the story behind it is to die for. ;)

7. Shug Avery from The Color Purple by Alice Walker

Shug, 40, Memphis

You love me, and I'll love you. It's as simple as that.

8. George Knightley from Emma by Jane Austen

George, 36, Surrey

A very practical person who dislikes both vanity and flattery. Living life with purpose and direction, engaged with the world.

9. Éowyn from The Lord of the Rings Trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien

Éowyn, 23, Rohan

Shieldmaiden. Healer. Slayer of the Witch King of Angmar. The easily intimidated should swipe left now.
