If you're into astrology, you probably look at someone's zodiac sign as the reason they act a certain way. "Oh, he's a Scorpio? Mmm...no wonder why..." or "Yeah, she's totally a Gemini." While many like to use astrology to check for compatibility with a romantic partner, it can be pretty eye-opening for much more than that, including your astrological compatibility with friends.
Whether you take astrology seriously or you look at your daily horoscope just for fun, some signs are notorious for having certain traits. For instance, Cancers are known for being super sensitive while Aries are known for being fiery and competitive. These traits can play out in our relationships in many different ways. That's why some signs may be more prone to things like toxic friendships than others.
But does it mean your friendships are doomed if you're one of those signs? "In truth, all the zodiac signs have proclivities that could lead them to make bad choices in friendships and relationships," astrologer Judi Vitale, author of Lovecasts: The Astrological Guide to Finding Lasting Love, tells Bustle.
So while some signs are more likely to have toxic relationships, because of their dominant traits, it doesn't mean they're destined to have horrible friendships. If anything, knowing your sign and your sign's downfalls can help you figure out where there might be conflict — and how to work out it. So here are the zodiac signs that are most likely to wind up having toxic friendships and how they can turn things around.
Pisces (Feb. 19 - March 20), Because They're Too Dreamy
Pisces (February 19 to March 20) are typically dreamers. They're ruled by Neptune, which is the planet of fantasy. While there's nothing wrong with being dreamy and imaginative, there's also a dark side to it. "Pisces see what they want to see rather than what is really there," Vitale says. Because of that, it makes it easy for them to overlook an toxicity happening in their friendship. They want to see the good in everything and a toxic friend can take advantage of that.
So if you're a Pisces, try to stay grounded and see the reality of your friendships for what they really are.
Aries (March 21 - April 19), Because They're Too Possessive
On the flip side, Aries (March 21 to April 19) are not only bold, unstoppable, and devoted, they can also be very proud, self-centered, and possessive. "They're too impulsive," Vitale says. "They find someone they like, hit them over the head with a club, and drag them back to the cave." This applies to both romantic partnerships and platonic friendships.
So if you're an Aries, remember that you can't control others. There's no reason to get offended when your friends make other friends — it doesn't mean they love you any less.
Libra (September 23 - October 22), Because They're Too Clingy
Libra (September 23 to October 22) are ruled by the planet Venus. So they're very likely to be wildly romantic and will do anything to be in love. On a good day, they can be charming and sincere. On a bad day, they can be spoiled, manipulative, and delusional. "Libra literally falls in love with friendship and any kind of connection that allows the 'other' to be always there," Vitale says. Unlike Aries who like to control, Libra likes to cling out of need.
Libras, it's great that you want to be with your friends all the time, but it's important to let them breathe. Give them some space; they'll still love you.
Virgo (August 23 - September 22), Because They're Too Critical
Virgo (August 23 to September 22) are ruled by the planet Mercury, which is the planet of communication. That's why Mercury going retrograde can mess all kinds of communication up. Virgos are typically dedicated, hardworking, witty, and practical. On the other hand, they can also be preachy, uptight, and very critical. "Virgos have a tendency to take on people as their 'little projects,'" Vitale says. "They believe they can change their friends and their partners, but it rarely works." Toxic friendships can make you feel like being yourself is not good enough.
So Virgos, it may be worth it to ease up on your friends and work on accepting them for the way they are.
What About Other Signs?
While these four signs may be the most likely ones to have toxic friendships, they're certainly not the only ones. My sun sign is in Taurus, which typically means I'm earthy, grounded, slow and steady, a tad bit materialistic, and really, really stubborn. But for some odd reason, I've always attracted friendships with Geminis. With Gems, it can sometimes feel like they're one person one day and another the next. For a Taurus who likes stability and yes, predictability, it can just be too much for me sometimes. And, every single one of my friendships and relationships with Geminis has never worked out (with the exception of my sister who's forced to love me unconditionally). I don't know what it is, but every one of those friendships became toxic in some way. So incompatible zodiac signs are definitely not limited to those mentioned above.
"My belief is that all signs can get along," Vitale says. "It’s just a matter of awareness of the qualities and difficulties that come with being any one of them." Astrologically speaking, a person is so much more than just their sun sign. We all have other signs and elements in our natal charts, or astrological birth charts, that you can't really blame someone for being "such a Pisces" or "such a Leo" unless their charts are predominately Pisces or Leo. But, being familiar with your sun sign inside and out is still a good place to start.
