James Charles Used A Fidget Spinner To Contour

by Alexa Tucker

Instagram makeup artists are known for experimenting with some pretty out-there application techniques, and some of them are just downright grody. In order of disgusting-ness, we're talking about the back of an iPhone, eggs, condoms, and — dear lord no — some girl's boyfriend's literal balls. (I'm still screaming.) So when James Charles' Fidget Spinner tutorial hit the 'gram, I thought it was a little unusual, but I was pleasantly not grossed out. Not to mention, it's pretty creative.

I admit, up until today, I had no idea what on earth a Fidget Spinner was. I'd heard of them and I'd seen them on TV and online, but I was blissfully unaware and had no desire to change that. It took Instagram's biggest makeup artist to get my attention, and I have to say, it worked. As the name suggests, while they're mostly known for being something to fidget with, Charles is making a strong case that they have untapped potential as an essential part of a beauty toolkit.

OK, so maybe not essential, but it's still pretty cool. After applying his foundation base, Charles used the spinner to apply highlighter, then used another side of it to apply contour. The lines it creates are super precise, so then he blended it all in using a Beautyblender. Here's a look at the step-by-step.

Step 1: Apply Highlighter

After foundation, of course.

Step 2: Apply Contour

So much precision.

Step 3: Blend it all in.

Using a real Beautyblender, thankfully, not an egg (or... anything else).

Step 4: Voilà!

After all of his other next-level MUA steps, of course. Here's the full vid.
