The Internet Can't Handle Nicole Kidman's Clapping

If you watched the Oscars on Sunday night, you may have enjoyed the scanning, sweeping views of the celeb-filled audience in the beautiful Dolby Theater in LA. A quick glimpse of Jennifer Aniston. A passing peek at Meryl Streep. And then, Nicole Kidman's weird clapping.

While she may be near perfect in ever other way, her method of applause was so strange (and distracting, and unnerving) that it was truly hard to miss. If a touching moment occurred, there she was "clapping" away in a sort of anti-rhythmic semi-clap that had people wondering what was going on. It didn't matter if she was happy, sad — she just could not get it right.

After evaluating some footage (i.e., stalking some gifs) I think I figured out the problem. She doesn't tap her palm with her fingers the way the majority of us do. Instead, she thrusts her arms skyward, bends her fingers backward in a sort of "Y" shape, and then smacks both her palms together. It's not an efficient way of clapping. Like, at all.

In fact, the more I think about it the weirder it seems. And I'm not the only one who thinks so. It took the internet about thirty seconds to blow up with memes, horrified tweets, and gifs galore. No one can handle Kidman's clap. Not even a little bit. Take a look at some reactions below.

I really don't know.

Agreed.

Chilling.

I'd like to know.

Apparently.

While Kidman may not be the best clapper who ever lived, at least she now has a plethora of memes to look back on and remember the night.
