What Does The Symbol In 'The Last Jedi' Trailer Mean?

Lucasfilm

Stop what you're doing and get in here, because we need to talk about something — what is the symbol in The Last Jedi trailer? The trailer dropped at Friday's panel at Star Wars Celebration Orlando and the symbol already has fans talking, because this isn't the first we've seen it. This image appears fairly early on in the full The Last Jedi trailer, with a mysterious hand tracing the area near it, and it's a pronged, cross-like object that appears to be on an old document. As fans may know, this is the symbol of the Jedi Order. "Their symbol of wings and what looks like a shining light represents their role and beliefs," according to the official Star Wars website. The site also includes a refresher about the significance of the council:

The Jedi Order was all about peace until the Clone Wars. Though a few Jedi survived Order 66 and the purge that followed, the Order as it was in the days of the Galactic Republic is no more.

As for the symbol's role in this trailer, it looks like it may be placed on a map, which may hold a hint about the movie's bigger picture. Since there's one character in particular who's been hidden away for a prettttty long time and happens to be a Jedi himself, I'm thinking this symbol may have something to do with hunting down none other than Luke Skywalker. It's right there in the title of the film that the Jedi are on the brink of extinction, so it would make sense that someone might be consulting a map, searching for a hiding place or hiding places.

But before you write me off as a conspiracy theorist, reading into one little symbol that gets skimmed by in the trailer, let me remind you of the fact that this symbol also appears on The Last Jedi's poster, seen above, as a blaze of light above Rey's lightsaber, twinkling out to the sides much like the map symbol. And its uses stretch back in the canon even before that.

So it's safe to say that the appearance of the Jedi Order's symbol in the trailer is probably pretty important, and we should all keep our eyes peeled for any future references. Consider that your mission, and we'll all check back here if anything new happens.

Editor's Note: A previous version of this article mistakenly did not identify the symbol as that of the Jedi Order.
