These Celeb Couples Are An Imperfect Match

by Lisa Fogarty

Some celebrity couples make total sense together. Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher played teen lovers on That '70s Show, so when the world learned they were madly in love and planning to start a family together, the news shocked very few people. The same can be said for Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello, and Gisele Bundchen and Tom Brady — otherwise known as perfect, more perfect, even more perfect, and the most perfect couple of all time. But every once in awhile, celebrities throw us a curveball by suddenly showing up at an event holding hands and hanging all over someone who makes fans scratch their heads and think: huh, who, him?! The purpose here isn't to insult — and my intention with this list of unexpected celebrity couples isn't meant to argue that one party, whose looks, talent, or fame isn't publicly perceived in the same way as their significant other, is somehow less deserving of his/her relationship.

On the contrary, the fact that these eight celebrity couples are in love, despite seeming at first glance not to share much in common, should only restore everyone's faith in the notion that chemistry is unpredictable and love can happen at any time to any one (though I imagine it's easier to find love if you're, let's say, Johnny Depp).

1. Amber Heard & Johnny Depp

Let's cut to the chase: Depp is 52. Heard is 29. Depp was engaged three times to three different actresses (including Winona Ryder) and was married once to Lori Anne Allison before settling down and enjoying a long and fruitful romantic partnership with Vanessa Paradis, with whom he has two children. His choices are his to make — no judgements — but, by comparison, Heard's love history is rather light. When Depp met Heard on the set of The Rum Diary in 2010, he must have been pretty damn smitten because he reportedly later named an island after her. The couple got married in a private civil ceremony in Los Angeles and later had another wedding on his private island. No big deal.

2. Cameron Diaz & Benji Madden

No one, except perhaps Nicole Richie, saw this one coming. Cameron Diaz and Benji Madden, who is the guitarist in Good Charlotte, met way back in the early '00s, when she was dating Justin Timberlake. Madden and his brother Joel, who is married to Richie, hung around the same crowd as Diaz for a while and the two reconnected years later. I always pictured the Bad Teacher actress ending up with a Hollywood actor type, but Diaz and Madden are reportedly happily married and eager to start a family.

3. LeAnn Rimes & Eddie Cibrian

It's difficult to get on board when you know a love affair allegedly started as a result of a cheating scandal. Singer LeAnn Rimes was married to Dean Sheremet when she reportedly first hooked up with Eddie Cibrian, who was married to the one and only Brandi Glanville from Real Housewives of Beverly Hills at the time. Rimes clearly has a set of cajones because who in their right mind would want to risk a feud with Glanville? Even though Sheremet revealed his divorce with Rimes had a lot to do with their careers, he might be chuckling to himself now because rumors surrounding Rimes and Cibrian's less-than-stellar union, including one that they're practically broke, follow them wherever they go.

4. Mary-Kate Olsen & Olivier Sarkozy

Mary-Kate Olsen, 29, and her 46-year-old beau Olivier Sarkozy, who is the half-brother of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, are notoriously private and rarely speak about their relationship. They've been together for four years, live together in New York City, and, although they might seem like opposites, reportedly have a solid connection and are often spotted cuddling and kissing at events. (They may even be married already!) Sources say Mary-Kate has made Olivier a better father to his two children, Julien and Margo, and that her family thinks he is the best thing that has ever happened to her.

5. Lady Gaga & Taylor Kinney

He's a model and actor known for his roles in Zero Dark Thirty and Chicago Fire and she's... well, Lady Gaga, who needs no introduction. The couple met in 2011 on the set of her music video for "You and I," where she played a mermaid and he played a mad scientist. He doesn't seem as eccentric as Lady Gaga and you can't be blamed for expecting her to marry someone more like Prince, but these two are totally head over heels for one another.

6. Christina Hendricks & Geoffrey Arend

On Mad Men, Christina Hendricks' iconic character, Joan, was always in the process of being pursued by a thousand different guys. I'm pretty sure this happens to her in real life, too, but Hendricks said she actually pursued Geoffrey Arend after meeting the actor through fellow Mad Men cast member Vincent Kartheiser. If you make the mistake of believing Hendricks is Joan, you might wonder why she hasn't fallen for someone who resembles Roger Sterling, but these two are so in love they even have a two-week rule: neither is allowed to go more than two weeks without seeing the other.

7. Avril Lavigne & Chad Kroeger

Avril Lavigne was married once before to Deryck Whibley, a fellow Canadian and musician who found fame with Sum 41 around the same time as his ex was dominating the charts. They seemed perfectly matched, which is why her divorce and subsequent marriage to Nickelback lead singer Chad Kroeger took a lot of people by surprise. Kroeger may be 10 years her senior, but he has been by her side throughout her battle with Lyme disease. Despite constant divorce rumors, Lavigne and Kroeger seem like a solid couple.

8. Hayden Panettiere & Wladimir Klitschko

Hayden Panettiere is 5'1" and seems as sweet as pie, while her 6'6" Ukrainian boxer fiancé Wladimir Klitschko literally kicks ass for a living. But Panettiere and Klitschko met and fell in love after cracking jokes about their insane height difference. Turns out, you really can't judge a book by its cover because they are a perfect match — and their daughter Kaya, who was born last year, is proof of that.

Now, don't all these couples give you faith that true love exists? The person of your dreams could really be anyone.
