The "Spice Up Your Life" Music Vid Saw The Future

by Kristie Rohwedder

Imagine: You are in a popular music group. The group's debut album was a big hit. Actually, “big hit” is a bit of an understatement: The group’s debut album ended up being one of the biggest albums in music history. How is the group supposed to follow that? The group takes over the world, that's how. In 1997, the Spice Girls released album Spice World, the movie Spiceworld hit UK theaters, and the music video for “Spice Up Your Life" premiered. The video for the first single off of their sophomore album depicts a futuristic, Spice Girls-ified metropolis. A literal Spice World.

It's been 18 years has since the “Spice Up Your Life” music video made its debut on MTV, and I think it is finally time to address the platform shoe-wearing elephant in the room: Does this music video portray "the future" accurately? Does this music video actually predict what "the future" will be like?

As far as the year '97 is concerned, 2015 is "the future." We are in 1997's future. It's all relative, mate. And get this: the music video actually got a lot right about "the future." Here are 11 things from the "futuristic" "Spice Up Your Life" music video that are true to life in 2015:

#1: The Hoverboards

I still can't believe this, but hoverboards really do exist now.

#2: Starbucks Serves Spice Lattes

When autumn rolls around, Starbucks patrons really, really, really want a zig-a-zig-PSL.

#3: There Will Be More Star Wars Movies

This film franchise isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

#4: People Wear Choker Necklaces

Given the cyclical nature of fashion, it was only a matter of time before '90s chokers were back in style.

#5: There Are Pedestrian Crossing Signals

They're simple, yet effective. Why reinvent the wheel when the wheel gets the job done?

#6: There Is Smokey Eye Makeup

The smokey eye will never go bad. It's the Twinkie of eye makeup looks.

#7: There Is Bathroom Graffiti

Scientists have yet to invent walls that magically erase graffiti scribbles as they happen.

#8: There Are Pots & Pans

*Checks kitchen cabinets.* Yep. Still using cookware in the year 2015.

#9: People Wear Sunglasses

As long as human eyeballs continue to be sensitive to sunlight, sunglasses will continue to serve a purpose.

#10: People Wear Eyeglasses

Laser vision correction and contacts are cool and all, but those options aren't for everyone. Spectacles are still going strong.

#11: People Still Watch Spice Girls Music Videos

I've never done anything of the sort, but I've heard tell of people spending hours watching Spice Girls vids on the YouTube in the year 2015. What a time to be alive!
