How The Fashion World Has Honored David Bowie

by Kali Borovic

The death of this legend on Jan 10, 2016 left the world shocked. There were many powerful tributes to the singer, but this one was one of the most moving. From the music to the makeup, the Burberry Menswear '16 show honored David Bowie in the best ways possible, with one model went above and beyond, surprising everyone with her lovely tribute.

According to Refinery29, model Hayett McCarthy walked down the Burberry runway on the last day of the London Collections Men hiding an unplanned surprise. The model opened her hands at the end of the runway to reveal the word "Bowie" written in black across both of her palms. A representative told the publication that it was "her own personal tribute to the musician," rather than a pre-planned part of the show. Short, sweet, and to the point, I think it's safe to say that no one was bothered by this moving surprise.

This wasn't the only part of the Burberry show that had been designed to honor the late musician, either. According to Refinery29, his music was playing as guests took their seats and the models sported red, gold, and blue glitter strategically sprinkled in the corners of their eyes for a Ziggy Stardust-inspired look. “I was just going to put it on one male model and then suddenly they all wanted it," Christopher Bailey, the brand's chief creative officer and CEO, told The Telegraph.

The Bowie-inspired makeup was the perfect subtle touch to add some interest to a calm collection of trench coats and blended fashions.

"It didn’t feel right to do a show that was celebratory today, when the news is so profoundly sad," Bailey tells The Telegraph.
