'Girls' Season 5 Trailer Song Is Full Of Clues

by Sabienna Bowman

Hannah Horvath is not changing her ways in Season 5 according to the newly released teaser, and I love her for it. The Girls Season 5 teaser trailer song "Stupid" by Ace Wilder provides some major clues about what is ahead for your favorite confused twentysomethings as they prepare to say goodbye to their 20s. With the series signing off in 2017 with Season 6 (sob!), Hannah, Marnie, Shoshanna, and Jessa have a lot of growing up left to do. The question is will creator/writer/star Lena Dunham have her girls suddenly figure everything out? Probably not.

"Stupid" is nothing if not a song about embracing life in all of its crazy glory. It could totally be Hannah's theme song. I am taking it as a sign that Hannah and her friends will continue to live life by Ms. Frizzle's (of Magic School Bus fame) rules: "Take chances, make mistakes, get messy... and pose nude!" OK, so Hannah added in that last part. The trailer song's lyrics speak to each character's journey in a major way, and as you prepare for Hannah's last hurrah, there is no better song to have on replay than "Stupid," and not just because it is catchy.

Check out the trailer below and prepare to parse "Stupid" for all the penultimate season clues because if I know Hannah, she is preparing to go out in a blaze of totally imperfect glory.

Hannah Is Getting Serious About Embracing Her Body

Foreshadowing "Stupid' Lyric: "No regrets, don't hesitate, that's another day"

Hannah has dealt with varying degrees of body confidence throughout her entire journey, but in Season 5 she is embracing who she is on the outside in new and even more artistic ways. She's posing nude, and by the looks of things she doesn't care who doesn't like it.

Shoshanna Is Still Figuring Herself Out

Foreshadowing "Stupid" Lyric: "Dumb and drunk and high/It's the best night of our lives"

OK, so Shoshanna is still a work in progress. Her time in Japan hasn't taught her a whole lot about cultural appropriation, but I'm betting it has opened up her worldview. I expect this season will set her up for big things to come in Season 6.

Jessa Has Reached Peak Cynicism

Foreshadowing "Stupid" Lyric: "Worry about other shots that you didn't make"

Jessa has approximately 20 episodes to figure out how to not hate everything, and she isn't off to the best start in the latest teaser. It's time for her to let herself learn how to learn to like something — even if it is against her nature. Otherwise, she could end up with a lot of regrets.

Everyone Is Working On Their Relationships

Foreshadowing "Stupid" Lyric: "Raise our glass and toast the world"

Friendships and romantic relationships have always been tricky for these characters, but the song and the trailer agree everyone is working together to grow as human beings. I am beyond relived to see Hannah actually approaching a non-Adam romance with serious thought, and seeing the way the characters are teasing each other in a caring manner shows they might be ready to embrace adulthood after all.

Hannah Is Getting Ready To Say Goodbye

Foreshadowing "Stupid" Lyric: "One last drink before we go/We head into the night"

Hannah, Shoshanna, Jessa, and Marnie are not who they used to be. The penultimate season of Girls is preparing you for the main event next spring. These girls are women now and while they still aren't perfect, their lives are starting to come together and make sense. That can only mean one thing: Hannah will be making big moves as her onscreen journey begins its end.

Watch the trailer and grab some tissues because the impending end of Girls is getting way too real. Season 5 premieres Sunday, Feb. 21 on HBO.
