11 Celebrity Relationships That Sadly Didn't Last

by Jordana Lipsitz

As pop culture enthusiasts, the things that happen to the celebrities we love often make or break our days. When Taylor Swift's been snuggling with her cats? My day is made. Remember when Justin Timberlake and Brittany Spears broke up? Even though it happened almost twenty years ago, whenever I think about that horrible time in the history of existence, my day is still ruined. Celebrity love drama is the perfect distraction from my own, often incredibly boring relationships (or lack thereof). However, when celebrity relationships don't last, a deep sadness falls over us all. It's almost like we were just broken up with by both parties. And then stabbed right in the heart.

The questions start flooding into my confused brain –– if that couple can't do it, how can I do it? Is love even real? How can we go on without them? How can they go on without each other? Will either of them ever find someone new and just as famous/attractive? And, most importantly, whose Instagram do I stalk now for classy date ideas?

Here are the celebrity relationships for which, upon their accursed end, we lost our damn minds while our hearts shattered into millions of teeny tiny pieces.

1. Seal And Heidi Klum

We all wish we could go back to that beautiful, snow-covered day. When Seal and Klum broke up, it seemed that love had died. Maybe it did.

2. Ryan Gosling And Rachel McAdams

When Gosling and McAdams hated each other, but then fell into a constantly on-and-off again love while shooting one of the most romantic love stories of all time, The Notebook, I fell in love with their love. I'm still in love with it, even though it's off for good at this point. It is a devastating love.

3. Idina Menzel And Taye Diggs

After killing it for years and years in Rent and being the King and Queen of Broadway, the couple we were all rooting for, Diggs and Menzel ended things in December 2013. I still have a hard time listening to "Seasons of Love" without sobbing. I mean, despite all the obvious reasons one would have that sentiment while listening to any part of the Rent soundtrack.

4. Brittany Spears And Justin Timberlake

Spears and Timberlake were those childhood friends who became lovers that we really hoped would make it to the big time (and then we could live vicariously through them, because, let's be real, it very rarely works with high school BFs). Alas, they split in 2002, because the duo weren't Mouseketeers anymore, and all good things must come to an end. I doubted the truth in love for years after that incident.

5. Justin Bieber And Selena Gomez

Are they still together? Are they not? I can't keep up. But each time Jelena breaks up is like a dagger in my heart. It always really seemed like she kept that boy in line.

6. Amy Poehler And Will Arnett

Nine years. They were together for nine years. I thought the comedic duo had made it. When they split, it felt like my aunt and uncle had pulled me aside after Christmas dinner and told me they just couldn't make it work anymore. If it can't work after nine years, can it ever work?

7. Lisa Bonet And Lenny Kravitz

I miss the days of Lenny Kravitz's first love before he started serial dating celebrities. This breakup is bittersweet, because, though it's pretty sad they broke up in 1993 after six years of marriage, as Kravitz said in an interview on Oprah's Master Class, "It was really all about bringing this beautiful child to the planet," meaning their daughter Zoë Kravitz.

8. Brad Pitt And Jennifer Aniston

I know that Brangelina are kicking it hard now, with their small classroom of children and their beauty and having a great time, but, when Pitt and Aniston first ended things in 2005 after seven years of marriage, and this breakup was rumored to be because of a romance started between Brangelina on the set of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, it was so sad.

9. Antonio Banderas And Melanie Griffith

Sure, both Banderas and Griffith had been divorced before, but that didn't make their divorce after 18 years of marriage any easier. For me. I'm not sure how it went for them.

10. Helena Bonham Carter And Tim Burton

How did this even happen? Did it really happen? As a weird gurl looking for weird boi, this black-clad, messy-haired duo gave me hope. Until one day, after 13 years of collaboration and common-law marriage, the two ended it.

11. Bruce Willis And Demi Moore

At least their 2000 divorce was amicable, and they're still one big happy family. But it still hurts, even if their beautiful daughters are still killing the game.

Take heart, my friends. Just because your favorite celebrity couples didn't last doesn't mean that you can't find lasting love. That's what I keep telling myself anyway. At least Neal Patrick Harris and David Burtka are still together and rocking amazing Halloween costumes every year with their perfect twins Harper and Gideon. (If they split, I may or may not take vows of chastity and silence and get thyself to a nunnery. Just saying.)
