The 13 Saddest Celeb Breakups Of The Year

by Kaitlin Reilly

The world collectively freaks out over cute celebrity couples, and in turn that means it also mourns them terribly when the love between them dries up. Though Hollywood romances are always fickle, 2015 seemed to be a particularly tough year for certain stars who found themselves single after spending years with the same partner. It seemed that you could hardly go a week without a tabloid announcing the separation of two formerly adorably in love celebrities. Sadly, 2015 saw many famous couples break up, despite fans having assumed they would be able to survive for the long haul. These announcements shocked the public, and, in some cases, led to some seriously sad breakup tunes.

Breakups are hard on pretty much everyone, so I can only imagine how much it would suck for the end of your relationship to play out in the public eye. Of course, that's one of the pitfalls of being a celebrity couple; every passive aggressive tweet, awkward red carpet photo, and interview about your relationship is analyzed by the whole world. Fortunately, the stars on this list are pretty badass as individuals, which means that they can handle the world's obsession with their former relationship — even if they've so moved on.

So which celebrity couples broke my heart by breaking up this year? Here are just a few fans said goodbye to in 2015:

1. Halle Berry & Olivier Martinez

Berry met actor hubby Martinez on the set of Dark Tide in 2010. They wed in 2013, but just two years later decided to divorce.

2. Blake Shelton & Miranda Lambert

Sadly, country's cutest duo called it quits this summer. Though the couple denied rumors of cheating and leading separate lives, ultimately Shelton and Lambert decided to go their separate ways. The former couple seems to be on good terms, but that doesn't make the breakup any less hard to swallow.

3. Gwen Stefani & Gavin Rossdale

Musicians Stefani and Rossdale had one of the longer running marriages in Hollywood — they were married for 13 years — but called it quits this August. Shortly after Stefani seemingly penned the breakup ballad "Used To Love You" about Rossdale, but it isn't all heartache for the No Doubt singer, as she's now dating fellow divorcee Blake Shelton.

4. Jennifer Garner & Ben Affleck

Garner and Affleck were reportedly on the rocks for awhile, despite their decade-long marriage. (Rumors that Affleck was cheating on Garner with their nanny certainly didn't help matters.) The couple decided to part ways in June.

5. Joe Jonas & Gigi Hadid

Jonas and Hadid weren't a couple for very long, but they dated for enough time that they got a cute nickname out of their romance: G.I. Joe. Sadly, the couple split after just five months together, and now, Hadid is reportedly with ex-Directioner Zayn Malik.

6. Kaley Cuoco & Ryan Sweeting

The Big Bang Theory star and her tennis player hubby got hitched after just a few months of dating, but sadly ended their marriage in September, two years after they tied the knot.

7. Megan Fox & Brian Austin Green

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles star and the former Beverly Hills, 90210 actor, who have two young children together, separated earlier this year after marrying in Hawaii in 2010.

8. Jon Hamm & Jennifer Westfeldt

Though the couple never wed, the Mad Men star and the Friends With Kids actress were together for 18 years. Sadly, they decided to part ways in September, but released a statement that insisted they would always be "supportive" of one another.

9. Emma Stone & Andrew Garfield

The real-life couple behind Gwen Stacey and Peter Parker dated for three years, but called it quits in October. Though the couple has been on-again/off-again in the past, it seems that this breakup is sticking.

10. Avril Lavigne & Chad Kroeger

Sadly, Lavigne did not get her ultimate happy ending with fellow Canadian rocker Kroeger. The pair, who wed in 2013, announced their breakup in September.

11. Kourtney Kardashian & Scott Disick

The on-again, off-again couple seemed to end things for good in 2015, after rumors surfaced that Disick had cheated on the mother of his three children. The state of their relationship is always somewhat up in the air, but for now I have to categorize them in the "couples lost this year" box.

12. Big Sean & Ariana Grande

Well, it was cute while it lasted. The pop star and her rapper boyfriend split up after eight months of dating in April, allegedly due to conflicting schedules.

13. Bradley Cooper & Suki Waterhouse

The American Sniper actor and the model reportedly dated for nearly two years, but broke up in March of 2015, allegedly due to conflicts brought on by their age difference. Considering that Cooper is 40 and Waterhouse is only 23, it sounds like a pretty fair reason.

Here's hoping that the members of these former celeb couples rock their new single lives into the New Year.
