Jon Hamm's 'Kimmy Schmidt' Cameo Is Shocking

by Jack O'Keeffe

Jon Hamm is no stranger to stopping by a comedy program here-and-there to make a hilarious cameo appearance, having previous stopped by 30 Rock and Parks & Recreation to deliver scene-stealing comic performances. Hamm's role as Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne on The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt has been one of his most prominent forays into comedic television — delivering a hilarious performance that still reminds the viewers how slick and slimy his character can be. It looked as though fans of the show had seen the last of Hamm after the Reverend was sent to prison at the end of Season 1, but luckily Jon Hamm has an Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Season 2 cameo that is brief, but important. [Spoilers for the finale ahead!]

Reverend Wayne appears in the final moments of the season, calling Kimmy Schmidt to inform her that he's getting married, which means they'll be needing to get a divorce — and then the credits roll. That's a pretty big cliffhanger for a show to end on, and one that promises some pretty exciting stuff for the future of the show. What will this divorce mean for Kimmy? Does she even know they're married? If Wayne is coming back in Season 3, who else can we expect? The only thing we know for sure about Season 3 of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is that it is happening, but that doesn't mean there aren't some things that we hope to see when the show returns.

More Jon Hamm, Please

For its first two seasons, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt has kept Jon Hamm as something of a late-season secret weapon, waiting to use him until the final episodes of the season. Hopefully the teaser that Hamm will play a major role in the plot of Season 3 means that we'll be getting a lot more of Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne's wild antics in the future.

A Great Cameo For The Reverend's Wife

The reason that The Reverend is returning to the show is to get a divorce as he's met someone new, and chances are that the show will employ an actress of Hamm's prowess to match his wild energy in the role. The real question here is whether or not it's a character we already know.

The Return Of Marcia Clark And Chris Darden

Sure, Sarah Paulson and Sterling K. Brown gave some pretty stellar performances as the prosecuting lawyers from the O.J. case recently — but for my money, I'd watch Tina Fey and Jerry Minor get wacky as these two famous lawyers any day of the week. With divorce comes lawyers, and these two have dealt with The Reverend in the past, which means they're the best choice to oversee a divorce in which he is involved — and really, any excuse to have Tina Fey be goofy onscreen is good enough.

While no plot points are guaranteed about Season 3, the writers seem to be very interested in getting The Reverend back into the show, and it's no wonder why. Not only is Jon Hamm an amazing comedic actor, but The Reverend is the strongest symbol of the past that Kimmy is so desperately trying to escape. His return to her life shows that the past can always catch up with you, but that only means you have to fight even harder. They don't call her "Unbreakable" for nothing.Images: Giphy (3)
