Will J. Law Appear In More 'X-Men' Movies?
X-Men: Apocalypse marks the end of the franchise’s "First Class" trilogy, which means that upcoming X-Men films might be subject to some huge change — mainly because the contracts for the trilogy's stars are expiring. While it's possible that Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Nicholas Hoult have already made their final X-Men film with Apocalypse, nothing has been set in stone, leaving fans to speculate about the fate of their favorite characters. In particular, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique. Whether or not Lawrence will be a part of more X-Men movies, no one can say for sure, but the actress did discuss the possibility with Entertainment Weekly. And, in typical Lawrence fashion, her response to the idea was an honest one.
“Fassbender and McAvoy and I were all talking,” she told EW. “Like, ‘Will you come back?’ ‘I dunno.’ ‘I’ll come back, if you come back.’ Fox should be terrified because the deal we made was like if one of us doesn’t come back, none of us are.” It's unclear how serious Lawrence was being about this, but her statement does make sense: Losing not one or two but all four of the actors behind those characters would be quite a big upheaval for the X-Men franchise.
Lawrence began her stint as Mystique in 2011 for the film X-Men: First Class. In 2011, Lawrence had yet to star in any of The Hunger Games films, she hadn't won any accolades for her work in film (though she was nominated for her role in the 2010 indie film, Winter's Bone), and she was relatively unknown. After Winter's Bone, X-Men: First Class was a major break-out role for Lawrence. First Class was a huge commercial success, and shortly after it's release, Lawrence gained notoriety at lightning speed.
It's fair to say that Lawrence's career took a pretty massive, uphill shift after First Class and before she signed the contract to complete the X-Men trilogy. Now that she's a highly sought after actress, she's honest about the fact that her time is important. As Lawrence puts it, “I would love to come back. I love the fans and I love the character. But then you realize how important your year is, like how important three months out of your year is. I don’t know. I shouldn’t be that honest.” If there's one thing Jennifer Lawrence happens to be, it's self-aware. She knows her skills as an actress are valuable, and she's not afraid to admit that.
Whether or not she'll come back as Mystique, Lawrence isn't going anywhere anytime soon, and that should make all of us — fans of X-Men and otherwise — pretty pleased.
