Taylor Swift Has A Lot Of Material For An Album

by Amy Mackelden

Taylor Swift is renowned for many things — her beloved squad, her cats, her online interactions with her fans. But perhaps the thing that the 1989 singer is most remembered for is the fact that Swift has written so many songs about her ex-boyfriends. From John Mayer to Jake Gyllenhaal, no one is safe from the singer's songwriting process, and she's even been known to leave clues in her liner notes as to who each song is about. However, with 1989, Swift started to move away from her usual subject matter. Her opening track "Welcome To New York" is an anthem about embracing the city on your own, and being brave enough to stay solo. "Shake It Off," too, is a song about ignoring your critics, and subject-wise is a bit step forward for the singer. Since her last album covered a broad range of topics other than her exes, what might Swift's next album be about? After all, her friend and squad member Gigi Hadid hinted that Swift is, in fact, recording new music.

On the inspiration for "Welcome To New York," Swift told Rolling Stone in September 2014,

It's so big, with so many people. I thought I would never be able to make it here, because I wasn't something enough — bold enough, brave enough to take on this huge city in all of its blaring honesty. And then at a certain point I just thought, 'I'm ready.'

This shift in attitude, which sees Swift looking outside of herself and embracing what the world has to offer shows a completely new direction for the former country singer, and makes me think that her new music will embrace more topics than ever before. So what are some of the subjects that could feature in Swift's new songs?

1. Her Squad

Swift's squad played a large part in The 1989 World Tour, and, since the singer has still publicly maintained most of her friendships with fellow celebrities like Lena Dunham and Gigi Hadid, it seems likely that female friendship could play a big part in Swift's new record.

2. Fashion

Swift famously held a runway during the performance of "Style" when she was on tour, and invited all of her besties to join her. The singer was recently seen at the launch of Gigi Hadid's new Tommy Hilfiger collaboration, and her growing love of fashion is evident every time she steps out of the house. Perhaps fashion will be a core topic in her new music?

3. Her Cats

Her cats are her family. Maybe Swift should draw inspiration from Miley Cyrus And Her Dead Petz and record an entire album about her furry friends?

4. Friendships That Have Ended

"Bad Blood" is supposedly about Swift's feud with Katy Perry. It's likely that other divides in the artist's friendship group will form the inspiration for new music — like maybe Hailee Steinfeld's comments about the squad.

5. The Kanye West & Kim Kardashian Drama

That recording of Swift approving Kanye West's song "Famous" is now legendary, especially since Kim Kardashian released it on Snapchat. It'd be so meta if Swift wrote a song about her side of the story. That's one way to get back in control of the narrative.

Whatever Swift's new album ends up being about it, I can't wait to hear it.
