Does Amy Schumer Get Her Politics From A Senator?

by Anam Syed

Whether Comedy Central's newest darling comic Amy Schumer is chatting oral sex with Chelsea Handler or mocking unrealistic standards imposed on women, she has never been shy or withdrawn about her liberal outlook. She leads a no-holds barred approach against conservative expectations. But does it run in the family? Sure seems to. Amy Schumer is in fact related to Chuck Schumer: Her first cousin once removed is none other than New York's own Senator Schumer.

That's right, the democratic politician shares some blood with one of our favorite funny ladies. Known as a bit of a publicity hound, Sen. Schumer has been on The Daily Show seven times. The pro-choice, pro-healthcare reform politician was named by The Telegraph as one of the most influential liberals in U.S. politics, (though Bob Dole did basically call Schumer a camera whore). Schumer, you'll also recall, is the star of his own pretty epic photobomb meme, stemming from Obama's inauguration. Though we think that sort of shameless fun just means these cousins didn't fall too far from the silly family tree.

So while some of us might spend the holidays just trying not to engage our relatives on topics like immigration or gun control, we can see there's no bad blood between these cousins. Join us as we outline more things these kin have in common as well as our favorite political hits of the fairer Schumer.

1. SHE'S ALSO A TOTAL SHOWBOAT

Which is something she can relate to Senator Schumer about. The prom sketch is pretty brilliant in an oh-my-god-please-have-a-moment-of-humility-so-I-can-stop-cringing sort of way.

2. SHE CAN WRITE A POLITICAL STYLE SHOW (EVEN IF IT'S NOT ABOUT POLITICS)

Our love of The Food Room is no secret. All the hustle and bustle of a congressional floor with 100% more fries. Yes please!

3. SHE'S A PRETTY GREAT INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALIST

Seriously, Schumer's sit down interviews are the most unsung segments on television. The honest, uncensored conversations, (well save for a little safe-for-TV bleeping of curse words), with everyone from strippers to ballerinas is a sheer delight and completely unseen elsewhere. This is really the "inside" part of the program, and as Schumer "goes deep" she unveils a lot of societal truths about what roads lead people to their careers.

4. SHE'S NOT TOO SHY TO TACKLE MILITARY RAPE

Documentary The Invisible War and neglect of active female servicewomen and veterans is an issue that is close to our hearts. Schumer attacks the problem in her own way, using a sketch about video games to highlight the stigma and roadblocks for women in the military, executed with finesse and nuance.

5. SHE'S IN TUNE WITH THE POLITICS OF WOMEN'S SOCIAL INTERACTIONS

From compliments you just can't swallow to food shaming yourself, Schumer is able to dig down deep into the way society teaches women to destroy themselves, (and reminds us that no, you're not legally stupid and you totally deserve that promotion).

6. SHE'S GOT GREAT FEMINIST INSIGHT ON MAKING IT AS A FEMALE COMIC

During Schumer's Reddit AMA, she gave the best possible answer to the question of what it's like to be a woman working her way up in show business especially when people are mostly obsessed with your looks. It's honest, and basically boils down to "be funny, and work hard, and don't worry about all that bullshit."

Amen, sister. Now all that's left is to go photobomb someone and then get fingerblasted in honor of both Schumers.
