When Is 'Chicago P.D.' Season 3?

While Law & Order fades slowly into the sunset with only Special Victims Unit still on the air, a new procedural dynasty is slowly taking over NBC. What started as a new series about firefighters and paramedics has become a massive, dramatic world in the fictional northwest. That said, only one of these shows has Erin Lindsay (save the odd crossover) — when does Chicago P.D. Season 3 start? [UPDATE: Deadline reports Chicago P.D. will return Sep. 30.]

The series, which premiered at midseason in January 2014, has gained popularity and is moving up the television ranks in a traditional sense. At NBC's Upfront presentation, we learned that while a specific premiere date has not been set, Chicago P.D. Season 3 will air this fall on Wednesday nights. No changes there. It will joined by Season 4 of Chicago Fire on Tuesday nights in November, when NBC's new variety show Best Time Ever With Neil Patrick Harris finishes its premiere season. Rounding out the franchise will be the new spinoff series Chicago Med, which debuts at midseason. So, you can look for Voight, Lindsay, and the rest of the Chicago P.D. gang around September with the rest of NBC's fall line-up.

The series will be paired on Wednesday nights with Season 2 of The Mysteries of Laura and Season 17 of Law & Order: SVU — so the power trio of badass ladies Erin Lindsay, Olivia Benson, and Laura Diamond is here to stay. It worked last season and they're doing it again.

What can we expect the third time around? The Chicago P.D. Season 2 finale airs Wednesday night, and there's no telling what will happen, especially as Det. Lindsay goes up against some suburban Illinois cops according to this sneak peek. TVLine has also promised that the Chicago P.D. finale will answer some of the questions that arose in the crazy Chicago Fire season finale. However, that doesn't stop Chicago P.D. from slamming us with any series-changing cliffhangers. It's a good thing that the show's returning in the fall! We won't have to wait too long to find out what happens next.

Since the Chicago shows all work together incongruously, Chicago P.D. will also probably help set up Chicago Med in Season 3. The paramedics of Chicago Fire will have an easy time crossing over, but what's going to get a bunch of cops and/or firefighters to the hospital? It could mean that one of the characters will get sick or injured, but I'll keep my fingers crossed. How will Lady Gaga connect to Chicago Med, after getting engaged to the star of Chicago Fire and becoming besties with the star of Chicago P.D.? We will see.

Editor's Note: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that Chicago Fire will air on Thursdays this fall. The NBC series will actually air on Tuesdays .
