When it comes to earrings, hoops get the "trashy" reputation because they’re considered inappropriate, unsubtle, and un-ladylike (or in other words, all the derogatory, made-up words created to put women into boxes). But in reality, hoop earrings are classic accessories that have never actually gone out of style, and are just as relevant today as they were in the disco era of the '60s and '70s.
Honestly, I’m not much for statement earrings. I usually wear simple diamond studs in my ear piercings and call it a day. But when '90s fashion and style were revived — and I started wanting to wear a choker and rock graphic t-shirts — I realized that hoop earrings were the statement earring of my childhood. While it took me some time to really invest in a pair and actually wear them with an outfit, I loved how they framed my face, yet also made a style statement. Contrary to their unflattering reputation, and that terrible “you know what they say about hoops” joke, I loved how hoop earrings made me feel. And today, they’re the only statement earring I will actually wear.
So in honor of hoop earrings, and in an effort to diminish their negative reputation, here are seven reasons why these gems are your new favorite accessory. From their creative designs to their ability to work effortlessly with any outfit, hoops prove they’re a classic statement earring that anyone and everyone can rock.
1. They Draw Attention To Your Face
Just like any statement earring, hoops have an uncanny ability to draw the eye towards your face. But unlike a chandelier or stud earring, hoops are in the shape of a circle so they are extra complimentary to your jaw and cheekbones, defining your features with both the shape and shade they create.
So no need to mess with contouring powder next time you’re looking for extra face definition. Just throw on a pair of hoop earrings — the bigger the better — so you can frame your face quickly and easily, without tons of makeup.
2. They Are Foolproof
There’s a reason why hoop earrings are classic: They have simply never gone out of style. Just like a pair of black sunglasses or a white button-down, hoop earrings are a crucial accessory to any wardrobe.
Depending on how you style them, they can be dressed up or down, perfect for a night out or just to get coffee. And the good part is that they’re super difficult to get wrong, because they look good with virtually anything. From a ball gown to jeans and a t-shirt, just imagine any outfit with hoops, because it’s possible.
3. They’re An Ode To The '90s
It’s certainly interesting to watch the '90s fashion movement become popular again. Suddenly, I see women wearing chokers and walking around in jelly shoes. But hoops are one of those fashion musts from the decade that have been easily overlooked, since they didn’t necessarily go out of style, but rather lost popularity.
Well, it might be time to start rocking hoops again. If only to reminisce on the amazing fashion and style of the '90s; because hoops certainly were cool back then, and frankly, I think they’re even cooler now.
4. Bloggers Love Them
For style inspiration, I look to fashion and style bloggers. Sure, fashion blogs might be dying, but I still love to look to bloggers for advice, insight, and inspiration for fashion trends, styles, and shopping. And bloggers like Chiara Ferragni of The Blonde Salad just know their stuff.
When she posted this Instagram wearing tiny, embellished hoops, I knew the earrings were officially making their comeback. Plus, her choker looks flawless with the hoops! And who wouldn’t want that dog as an extra accessory?
5. And So Do Celebrities
You would be surprised at how many celebrities have worn hoops before and absolutely made them look fabulous, because I certainly am. The list includes the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, and even Cameron Diaz, and I’m sure there are more.
But one of my favorite celebrities to rock the hoops is Khloe Kardashian, because it’s obvious from her Instagram feed that she loves hoops and she’s not afraid to show it. I adore how fabulous and strong Kardashian looks in her hoops, from big gold ones to smaller silver varieties. Her hoop collection is undoubtedly on fleek.
6. They Come In Unique Designs

While hoops may have once been known as thin metal in the perfect shape of a circle, they aren’t now. Today, designers and brands have gotten innovative with the classic shape and added extra embellishments and accessories to make them unique and original.
My new favorite pair, above, features a faux pearl through each hoop. And while grandma might disagree with me, I love the juxtaposition of the ladylike pearl with the dynamic, round hoop. Other designs feature rhinestones, twists, and even chains. So no matter your style, there’s something for you.
7. And In Plenty Of Sizes
And finally, because we all know it’s hard to pull off a hoop at big as Khloe Kardashian’s, it’s a good thing hoop earrings come in all sizes. From tiny hoops the size of a ring for your pinky finger, to a hoop that could go around one of your legs, there are equally rad hoops for someone just trying out the trend or someone willing to go all out for it.
Hoops don’t necessarily have to be super large and graze your shoulder; they just have to feel comfortable on you and make you feel confident in what you’re wearing. That’s the most important thing, after all.
Just try and accomplish that wearing a pair of hoops, and I promise you, you won’t regret it.
Hoop to it!
