Spoilers ahead for Grey’s Anatomy Season 19, Episode 18. When a show runs as long as Grey’s Anatomy has, familiar patterns and plot lines are bound to emerge from time to time — and for many fans, one Season 19 is hitting a little too close to home. The May 11 Grey’s Anatomy episode saw Jo get closer to Sam Sutton, the patient who underwent a successful surgery after a wingsuit accident made a “jigsaw puzzle” of his bones.

Before last week’s surgery, he asked Jo if she was single — and was very glad to learn that she was. “Great,” he said. “Now I have something to live for.”

By the latest episode, Sam seemed keen to follow up on his pre-surgery sweet talk. “I just wanted to see you so I could thank you [for] saving my life,” he said, after paging her to his room. He didn’t need her medical help, though. “I thought I could flirt with you while we play a game of cards. You’ll be holding all the cards, for real.”

They spent the rest of the episode in similarly flirty fashion: from Jo helping Sam scratch itches under his cast, to signing the plaster (a move straight out of the middle school puppy love handbook). They even managed to bond over a bloody bedside procedure!

It’s all very sweet — and scarily familiar. As many fans pointed out, Jo and Sam’s budding relationship is reminiscent of Izzie and Denny’s back in Grey’s Anatomy Season 2. Izzie would play Scrabble with Denny while he waited for a new heart, but their doctor-patient rapport soon got very personal. And Link’s jealousy over Jo and Sam’s growing bond? Very Alex Karev.

Izzie and Denny’s short-lived romance ended pretty tragically, of course, which is why fans expressed their concerns about what might be coming for the pair. Some also noted similarities with Teddy and Henry. After all, doctor-patient relationships don’t often get happy endings on this show.

According to Sam Page (who plays Jo’s potential patient fling), things may get even more serious between the pair. “We have a lot of good conversations and everything that starts kind of on the surface really goes deeper as the long run in the hospital [continues],” he recently told People of his recurring role on the show. Here’s hoping Grey’s manages to subvert the tragedy this time around, though — because, well, Jo doesn’t need another heartbreak.
