Stream These 9 Golden Globe Nominees

20th Century Fox

It's about that time! The 2017 Golden Globes award ceremony will air on Jan. 8 at 8:00 p.m. ET on NBC. Did awards season sneak up on you? If so, you might be wondering where to stream the 2017 Golden Globes movies. When a studio thinks a movie has a good chance of being nominated, they often choose to send it to theaters it late in the year so it's fresh in voters' minds. So unfortunately, there are no legal ways to stream recent releases like Jackie, La La Land, or Arrival. But plenty of Golden Globes nominees have already wrapped their theatrical runs and have arrived on various streaming services. I'm going to tell you where to find nine streaming Golden Globe nominated movies so you can watch them before the red carpet begins.

The available pool of movies includes dark comedy, animation, an indie musical, and even a superhero movie. Their collective nominations include nods for leading and supporting performances, screenplay, and several Best Motion Picture categories. And they're all at your fingertips right now. So get to streaming these acclaimed films and find yourself much more informed (and opinionated) by the time the 74th Annual Golden Globes airs on Sunday night.

1. Hell Or High Water

Chris Pine and Ben Foster are brothers desperate to bail out their family legacy in one of the year's surprise hits. The film pulled nominations for Best Motion Picture - Drama; for a screenplay by budding writing talent and Sons Of Anarchy actor Taylor Sheridan; and for Jeff Bridges (who plays one of the lawmen on their tail) as Best Supporting Actor. You can rent it on iTunes, Amazon, and FandangoNow.

2. Florence Foster Jenkins

The ever-reliable Meryl Streep sparkles in this biopic of an eccentric and wealthy woman who devotes herself to becoming a renowned opera singer even though she doesn't quite have the voice. The Globes recognized Florence Foster Jenkins in the Motion Picture - Musical Or Comedy category; for lead performances by Streep and Hugh Grant; and for a supporting turn by The Big Bang Theory's Simon Helberg. Stream it on iTunes or FandangoNow.

3. Deadpool

This is one of those instances where I wish that reality and fantasy could converge just so I could see how Wade Wilson would react to his movie's Best Motion Picture - Comedy nomination. I'll settle for a rewatch of Ryan Reynolds' nominated lead performance in this R-rated Marvel flick on HBONow.

4. Sing Street

Prepare to have your heart warmed. Sing Street is the latest from musically-inclined filmmaker John Carney (Once, Begin Again), and it's basically a love letter to his youth in Ireland, pop music, and the '80s. The music is original, and the young performers are mostly newcomers, so I was very happy to see this lovely film nominated for Best Motion Picture - Musical Or Comedy. Sing Street is available on Netflix or you can rent it from iTunes.

5. Captain Fantastic

Viggo Mortensen is a widower determined to fulfill his wife's wish of raising their children off the grid and outside of a capitalistic society. The quirky drama was too twee for some, but Mortensen received a Best Actor nomination from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for his work and probably also for that beard. Rent it on Amazon, iTunes, or FandangoNow.

6. The Lobster

If you think this universe caters to couples, then wait till you get a load of the alternate reality of the black comic indie, The Lobster. Colin Firth is nominated for a Globe for his role as a newly single man who has a limited number of days to find a new partner before he and any other failures are literally turned into animals. Watch it and weep about its symbolic accuracy on Amazon (free for Prime members), iTunes, or FandangoNow.

7. War Dogs

War Dogs disappeared from theaters fairly quickly and didn't make any critical waves, but Jonah Hill still scored a nod for his portrayal of real-life arms dealer Efraim Diveroli in the action comedy. Round up your 'bros and rent War Dogs on Amazon, iTunes, or FandangoNow.

8. Kubo And The Two Strings

From the imagination factory Laika (Coraline, The Box Trolls), Kubo And The Two Strings is a stunning stop-motion coming-of-age story. Watch the nominee for the Best Motion Picture - Animated Golden Globe before that category is announced on Sunday on Amazon, iTunes, or FandangoNow.

9. Zootopia

Zootopia is a charming allegory about prejudice and thus, the animated movie 2016 sorely needed. It's competing with Kubo, Moana, Sing, and My Life As A Zucchini for the animated movie Golden Globe. Get inspired by the plucky Judy Hopps on Netflix, Amazon, or iTunes.

Remember that the Golden Globes can be a great predictor for Oscar nominations. So stream these movies now, and you might be ahead of things come the Academy Awards.
