What The New Moon Supermoon Means For Your Sign

When any sort of celestial event with "super" in the title rolls around, people perk up. Admit it — you just did, too, when you heard that the second new supermoon in a row will be rising on May 25, 2017. So what does the new moon supermoon mean for your sign? It varies, of course, but generally, uh, a lot.

A supermoon is essentially what the word itself sounds like: A really, really big moon. It occurs when a new moon or a full moon coincides with perigee, the monthly moment when the moon and the Earth are closest together, thanks to their respective orbits. In case you're wondering, yes, there is the flip side to this phenomenon; they're called micromoons or mini-moons. They sound very sad and lonely, or possibly very cute. They look really tiny in the sky because they're the furthest away from Earth they can be.

In recent years, we've become a bit obsessed with supermoons — remember the Super-Blood-Eclipse Moon of 2015? Or the three consecutive supermoons that rounded out 2016? For a term coined by an astrologer in the 1970s (it only began to enter headlines around 2011), "supermoon" has become a super trend.

On April 26, we experienced a new moon in Taurus that was also a supermoon. Though we couldn't see it (new moons just look dark from here on Earth), the moon was super close, super big, and, in keeping with the Western Astrologer credo "As above, so below," super powerful. Yep, the general astrological consensus seems to be that a supermoon, be it a new moon or a full moon, is essentially a dialed up version of its usual pivotal self.

This month, we'll enjoy a second new moon supermoon, this time in Gemini, on May 25. In fact, although there are four supermoons in 2017, the only visible one won't rise until December. How am I reading into that? 2017 is full of second, and third, and fourth chances. Full steam ahead, my dudes. The time to jump is now.

When new moons roll around each month, they offer us a chance at redemption, renewal, and starting over. Often, our perceptions are altered, and with clear eyes we can see new potential in old ideas. According to the Astro Twins, "Astrologers believe that our energy begins to build at the new moon, then peaks two weeks later at the full moon."

This is the time to begin, in whatever terms make the most sense with your life.

Aries (March 21 - April 19)

This is an expansive time for you, ya little ram! Harness that creative, "can do" burst of power from the super new moon. Take the time to set goals not just for the next month, but for the rest of the year. Step one? Whatever it is, take it.

Taurus (April 20 - May 20)

Happy Taurus season, Taurus! The sun is in your sign! Mercury will turn direct! Flowers are blooming! But come the super new moon, take a breath and reevaluate your sense of stability, be it career-wise, financially, romantically. With this clarifying energy, you can identify that which threatens your sense of security — and then get it the hell out of your life.

Gemini (May 21 - June 20)

All right, Gemini, look: I know you've had it tough. Mercury is your ruling sign, and it's been retrograde for weeks, and, like, the world is on fire. But you are tough. You are so tough, so when the super new moon rises in Gemini on May 25, you can fight through the unease and the fatigue to evaluate, truly, what you consider to be important. Take Annabel Gat's advice and delay lighting those magick candles. Plus, Gemini season starts May 20. We all know you love that.

Cancer (June 21 - July 22)

Sweet little crabby Cancer, let's have a heart-to-heart: The new moon supermoon is going to bring about relationship tension across the board. Friendships, blood ties, love ties — we're about to enter rough waters. But as the Astro Twins over at AstroStyle write, "Endings can be beginnings, too." Let that be your mantra for the next few weeks.

Leo (July 23 - Aug. 22)

Invigorating travel? Bustling social life? According to Susan Miller, you limelight-loving Leos are going to have quite a nice super new moon. Enjoy it. Say yes. Let this celestial re-start be the open window your life has needed.

Virgo (Aug. 23 - Sept. 22)

I know it is against your details-loving nature, Virgos, but this month, let down your hair and be spontaneous. Impulsive, even. I know you'll never abandon your practicality (and it often serves you well), but drink in the new supermoon energy, indulge in some ambitiousness and, per the Astro Twins' advice, take up a passion project.

Libra (Sept. 23 - Oct. 22)

As a Libra myself, I know how much we hate dealing with financial stress or romantic dry spells — and we've been suffering through both for the past few months. But May, oh, sweet May, things are beginning to really, really, look up. Before we can go off galavanting (with Venus as our ruling planet, we love to love), though, the super new moon will rock many of our relationships to the core. According to Susan Miller, those with unstable foundations will likely crumble. Oy. Had to happen some time, I guess.

Scorpio (Oct. 23 - Nov. 21)

Scorpios, buck up: The new moon supermoon will be blooming in your intimacy and sharing sector, writes Cafe Astrology, sparking the urge to start over and seek a fresh start. Sound nice? Uh, there are probably other people involved, my dudes. Compromise is the name of the game.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21)

Might as well call you Cupid, because this month, love is flinging itself at you, ya little archers. The super new moon in particular will bring about new relationships, both career-minded and romantic. According to the Astro Twins, you may even set your eye upon someone with "forever potential." Harness this clarity and forethought.

Capricorn (Dec. 22 - Jan. 19)

A reminder, sea-goats (yes, that is your sign's symbol; no, I can't elaborate): Self-care should extend to your physical well-being as well. As Annabel Gat notes, the super new moon energy is great for beginning a more healthy routine, but beware the obsessive, possessive nature lurking. You are your own keeper, and don't let anyone act otherwise.

Aquarius (Jan. 20 - Feb. 18)

It truly is the dawning of the age of Aquarius, as the song from Hair croons. The super new moon's energy is invigorating AF, especially with all the road blocks that April threw up, but keep in mind, per Cafe Astrology's advice, that boundaries are healthy and important and necessary. Respect them. Build them. Tend to them.

Pisces (Feb. 19 - March 20)

Hey, Pisces, how ya holding up? I know it's been a tough few weeks, but listen: The super new moon is bringing with it luck, and enough of it to last for another 10 days, says Susan Miller. Hang in there. Good time are around the bend.
