15 Style Essentials To Pack For A Week-Long Trip

From ‘90s-style shoes to chic jumpsuits.

What To Pack For A Week Trip, From '90s-Style Shoes To Rompers

With more and more people getting vaccinated, the travel industry is expected to pick up this summer like never before. I was able to get the Pfizer vaccine early because of underlying conditions, and the minute I was cleared by my doctor, I was back on the road traveling again. I’m certain many people will follow suit for the cleverly-titled “shot girl summer,” dressing up and socializing to make up for lost time. But it’s not always easy to figure out what to pack for a week trip, especially post quarantine.

For my first trip after getting vaccinated, I went to Palm Springs for what my friends and I dubbed Fauxchella, a week of socially distanced fun and relaxation around the same time the Coachella festival usually takes place (it’s been cancelled for two years in a row). And I packed a ton of fashion essentials that made me excited about dressing up again.

After wearing sweats and pajamas for a year, it felt great to pull out my old bright-colored dresses, summer hats, and yes, even high heels. Even though it was admittedly hard to get back in the swing of socializing and even being around strangers, my outfits helped me to start feeling like myself again.

My surroundings inspired me a lot when it came to getting dressed: I stayed at the Dive Palm Springs, a quaint, boutique resort inspired by the 1960s French Riviera. With lush foliage, a heated pool and jacuzzi, and towering palm trees, it felt like I was transported to the South of France for the weekend. And as someone who desperately misses international travel, that’s just what I needed. Feeling the ‘60s retro vibes, I dressed the part: sweeping maxi dresses, straw bags, strappy sandals, and more.

Ahead, find everything you should pack for your first vacation out of quarantine.

A Classic Jean Jacket

One of the most important pieces on your checklist, a jean jacket is perfect for cool evenings, pairing just as easily with maxi dresses as a sports bra and bike shorts.

3

A Comfy Pair Of Crocs

The polarizing footwear trend from the ‘90s comes in handy for any travel you have to do. Slide them on with sweats, denim, or a dress, and you’ll be ready to commute to your next destination.

4

Travel Size Sunscreen

Whether you’re headed to a warm or cold weather destination, packing sunscreen is a must. Supergoop’s Unseen boasts 40 SPF and it seamlessly blends into your skin without leaving residue behind.

5

A Fun Pajama Set

A glamorous pair of pajamas is perfect for lounging around the hotel and ordering room service. This Sleeper set features feather trim on the cuffs and hem.

6

A Designer Carryall

Splurge on a designer carryall from a resale site that you can use for all your travels, for years and years to come.

7

A Statement Dress

Whether you’re going to a dance party or on a dinner date, you should pack at least one statement dress for a night out. I love this Christopher John Rogers design that blends neon, colorful stripes, and checkered print in one stunning piece.

8

A Straw Hat

Headed on an island vacation? Grab a stylish straw hat with a wide brim that will function like your own personal beach umbrella.

9

A One-Piece Swimsuit

Pack a one-piece swimsuit in an unexpected pastel green color. This style doubles as a top. Just pair it with denim shorts or a printed skirt for a look you can wear out and about.

10

A Bold Pair Of Pumps

Bright pumps are more versatile than you’d imagine. Dress up all your neutrals with these yellow stunners, or pair them with a pink or green top for a fun color blocking moment.

A Cute Press-On Nail Set

If you’re running short on time or not comfortable going to a salon, I love these press-on nails by Black-owned brand B.Clawed. These come in an array of styles from embellished to natural.

12

Summer Slides

Invest in a comfy pair of slides you can wear with anything in your suitcase. The white hue ensures this will be a staple in your summer wardrobe.

An Easy Day Dress

For flights or even bus travel, I always reach for a Hillhouse nap dress. It’s stylish and pulled together, but as comfortable as your favorite nightgown. Accessorize with everything from sneakers to strappy stilettos.

14

A Skincare Set

Just because you’re on vacation doesn’t mean you have to drop the ball with your skincare routine. I swear by this travel-size kit from Dr. Barbara Sturm, formulated for darker skin tones. It includes cleanser, serum, and face cream with ingredients like magnolia extract, hyaluronic acid, and purslane which nourishes and evens skin tone.

15

A Go-With-Anything Bag

I love a simple black handbag you can wear with any outfit you pack. This Brandon Blackwood tote also happens to be a conversation starter with its ‘End Systemic Racism’ inscription, and it’s small enough to fit inside your carry on.

A Sleek Jumpsuit

To conserve space in your suitcase, opt for one-and-done outfits like this chic jumpsuit. Whether styled with red mules or a pair of nude flip flops, you’ll look instantly polished.
