Who is Justin Bieber’s "The Feeling" about?

by Amy Mackelden

One of the most important questions we all have to ask ourselves is who exactly are all of Justin Bieber's songs about? Since the release of Purpose, there's been constant speculation about Bieber, and whether any of his new songs are about his on-off relationship with Selena Gomez. In an interview on Ellen, Bieber even named several of the songs that are about Gomez, including "Sorry" (I mean, obviously) and "What Do U Mean?" But there are probably others too, right?

Justin Bieber has been totally open about Purpose, and how it's his most personal album to date. Of course, album track "The Feeling" is no exception, feeling every bit as personal as his single releases. Featuring singer Halsey, "The Feeling" is a total tearjerker, as well as an examination of a relationship, trying to figure out whether it's love or habit. The only thing left to do is a thorough analysis of the lyrics in question to figure out who "The Feeling" is about (please be Selena Gomez please be Selena Gomez). With constant rumors of a Justin Bieber/Selena Gomez reunion, it makes sense that we examine every song on Purpose for clues about their relationship. After all, so far, the album appears to be a declaration of love and/or apology from Bieber to Gomez. So, let's do this.

You are to meA part of me just like anatomyYou're pulling meYou're pulling me in like you're gravity

Right off the bat, it seems like these lyrics are about Selena Gomez. In an interview with Complex, Bieber said of their relationship, "Nothing else mattered. We were all about each other. But when it’s like that and you get your value from that, people will always disappoint you." Seems like Gomez is definitely the gravity.

I'm notorious for thinking you're full of beautifulInstead of hollowSugar on your lips, it's hard to killJagged like a pill, so hard to swallow

Seeing the beauty in someone, inside and out, totally sounds like love, but, as Bieber mentioned in his interview with Complex, "My identity was in her. Her identity was in me. When stuff would happen, I would lose my freakin’ mind, and she would lose her mind, and we would fight so hard because we were so invested in each other." Which has got to be where the jagged little pill comes in, something being both so beautiful and so destructive.

Later in the song, Bieber asks the all important question, "Am I in love with you? Or am I in love with the feeling?" Which seems to mirror his interview with Complex when he says, "Love is a choice. Love is not a feeling."

Whoever "The Feeling" is about, one thing is for sure. Bieber is at an important juncture in his life, considering what love is, who his most important relationships are with, and how he wants to move forward with the people in his lives. If this song is anything to go by, Selena Gomez seems to have had a hugely important impact on him, and that has to be a good thing. Listen to the song below.
