Feud alert! According to Twitter, Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez are fighting — and, in true 21st century form, the evidence behind the rumors is an alleged tweet in which Demi Lovato called Selena Gomez a bitch. The tweet (since deleted) is a picture of Lovato in the ocean captioned, "Swimming away from the bullshit. Bye bitch." Drama. This has even more significance considering Lovato also unfollowed Gomez on Twitter the same day.
Sure, the evidence does seem damning. But here's the deal with deleted tweets: It's hard to verify that it actually happened. All you have is a screenshot, and someone's word that they didn't photoshop it — and with all the celebrity Twitter hackings we've had recently, it's hard to know what to trust anymore. After all, on Thursday we saw two Glee stars' accounts get hacked with Chris Colfer's account saying he was fired from Glee and Lea Michele's saying she was pregnant. And let's not forget Wilmer Valderrama's Twitter was hacked as well.
In this case, I think it's pretty easy to come to a decision on the matter, though: I don't think Demi Lovato posted a "bitch" tweet in regards to Selena Gomez. Though it's clear that she has unfollowed Gomez for unspecified reasons, it's hard to believe Lovato would post something so mean-spirited when she's previously been a champion for being an uplifting presence online.
For one, the girls are friends, and have been since they both first hit the scene. Even though they've drifted apart over the years as they forge their own career paths, they recently made time for one another last winter, and they even took an adorable Instagram picture of their reunion.
In February, after the news broke that Gomez had taken a trip to rehab for emotional issues, Lovato tweeted a supportive message that was pretty obviously meant for her friend.
But then there's the whole fact that Lovato goes out of her way to be uplifting online and encourages others to do the same.
With that kind of attitude, I have a really hard time believing she would have photoshopped together this image and then posted in a dig towards another singer — especially one that's been her friend. It's absolutely not out of the realm of possibility that the tweet was fake.
If you ask me, the only thing that's bullshit here is the attempt to once again pit two women against one another. (Can we please stop doing that?)
