King Simon Will Live On 'The Royals' — For Now

by Caitlin Gallagher

In real-life, the royal family of England is celebrating the newest addition to their family with the birth of Prince William and Kate Middleton's daughter — Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana (how I adore the name!). But E!'s version of the British royals has the family is dealing with a tragedy since King Simon could die on The Royals . I refuse to accept a world (even a fictional one) where Cyrus is the King of England, but with Simon still unconscious in the hospital after being stabbed, the biggest creep in the world is now the ruler of Great Britain. But would The Royals really kill off the legitimate king? There are only two episodes left in the show's first season, so I expect that The Royals will turn up its craziness to 11 for the Season 1 finale, which means anything could happen.

The only things I'm fairly certain of when it comes to The Royals is the fact that Queen Helena and Cyrus never ceases to amaze me with their manipulation tactics and that twins Prince Liam and Princess Eleanor really are good people (which is really quite miraculous with a mother like theirs). In the May 3 episode, "The Great Man Down," Prince Liam was supposed to take over the throne as the prince regent while his father is in the hospital. Cyrus claimed that Simon isn't actually the father to the twins (Liam does kind of look like Captain Lacey...) and now Cyrus has taken over as the acting King of England with the help of Helena. Although I am not sold on the fact that Liam and Eleanor aren't actually King Simon's children, it doesn't stop Cyrus from taking over the throne as they await the test results of Liam and Eleanor's paternity.

But if King Simon recovers, I'm pretty sure Cyrus will be banished from the kingdom forever (even though I now don't think he was there for the king's stabbing despite needing an alibi). The rational part of me thinks that at this point, if The Royals wanted to kill off the king, they would have done it by now. But The Royals is a borderline soap opera (in the best way possible) and by having Simon in this state of limbo, the show has more to play with when it comes to the fate of the monarchy. Head of security (and Ophelia's dad), Ted Pryce, said about the king, "The doctors are amazed that he's still alive" since he was stabbed twice. After that point, King Simon had surgery (although he remained unconscious). But the fact that he survived surgery has to be kind of a good sign, right?

Eh, not so much. King Simon is definitely the outlier when it comes to the characters on The Royals. He isn't scheming like the older generation on the show and he isn't as buzzy as the younger generation, so it's definitely not out of the realm of possibility that he could be written off the show. King Simon actor Vincent Regan's IMDb page has him listed as being in the last two episodes of Season 1 of The Royals (May 10's "In My Heart There Was a Kind of Fighting" and May 17's "Our Wills and Fates Do So Contrary Run"), but that doesn't really indicate whether he'll live or die.

Although the show isn't afraid of being super dramatic, with the death of Prince Robert starting the series, it's fairly improbable that another seriously important member of the royal family would die so soon afterward. That, and the possibilities for scandal that happen while King Simon lies unconscious in a hospital room, are what make me think that the writers will keep the King alive for now. Since The Royals is already renewed for Season 2, the final moments of the Season 1 finale could have King Simon waking up with no idea of what's been happening to his kingdom. And just because the king may live, it doesn't mean he will be found fit to rule England after his traumatic ordeal — especially if Queen Helena has anything to say about it...
