This is How Queer Women Like to Consume Porn

by Maya M

Though there is a constant influx of data on porn consumption across different demographics, we've got some interesting new data on how much porn and erotica queer women consume, what kind they like best, and how they consume it. The data comes to us courtesy of the Ultimate Lesbian Sex Survey, which Autostraddle launched in February; in the months since then, it's given us a lot of insight into the general love and sex lives of real lesbian, bisexual, and queer women, from how often they orgasm to how monogamous they are. Now we can add this valuable pool of information to the mix, because let's face it: Straight dudes aren't the only ones who like porn.

The myth that only men watch porn is becoming rapidly antiquated, especially as feminist porn and other female-friendly porn websites are gaining popularity and momentum. Research even shows that there is a noticeable connection between viewing porn and decreased sex crimes. Plus, many argue that porn is a positive thing because it can open up communication channels with your partner, liberate and empower those who watch it, and inspire couples to get creative in the bedroom. Though porn can be an extremely exploitative industry, there's a lot to love when it comes to ethical and safe porn — that is, porn which is produced without exploiting its cast or crew and promotes safety for the actors.

So what are the habits of lesbian, bisexual, and queer women when it comes to porn and erotica? Here are six interesting piece of data about porn and erotica consumption by this demographic; head on over to Autostraddle for more.

1. 87 percent of respondents said they consume smut, erotica, and/or porn.

This is a significantly higher percentage than a study by the Pew Research Center, which reported that only eight percent of women admitted to watching porn, regardless of orientation.

2. Of those women, 39 percent consumed porn at least once per week.

Also, the majority of women who consumed porn more than once a week were people having sex once a year or less.

3. Over one third of the women read lesbian/queer erotica in print.

Some of the women who look at content in print left comments like, "Erotic comics are actually my favorite, but I wasn’t sure where they fit. They are usually queer but not always. I read online and sometimes print," and "I mostly look at solo pics and drawings of women."

4. Of the women who consume porn, 65 percent only watch porn created for lesbian/queer people.

Some of these queer-friendly or exclusively queer porn sites include Crash Pad, Queer Porn TV, and Jiz Lee.

5. Around half of them watch videos depicting heterosexual sex.

Though this seems initially surprising, lesbian porn is usually made for a straight, male gaze and is therefore problematic or just plain inaccurate. News flash: Scissoring is not all we do.

6. And a third of them enjoy watching videos depicting male homosexual men.
