7 Books 'Ghostbusters' Fans Should Read
If you spent your weekend like me — seeing the new Ghostbusters movie — then you probably laughed, cried, and decided that Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, Kristen Wiig, and Melissa McCarthy were your new favorite actresses and your dream BFFs. I've been a fan of Ghostbusters and the paranormal genre since I was a little kid — and one of my all time favorite ways of indulging in that passion is by reading paranormal books.
Sure, I love to watch super scary movies or read terrifying horror books from time to time. But I'll never need to recover after reading a positively hilarious paranormal story that features sarcastic ghosts, undead brides-to-be, and witty witches. Even if you aren't particularly keen on the horror or paranormal genres, you'll love the books below. Like the new Ghostbusters movie, they're a little bit scary... and really, really funny. Plus, they all feature amazing, kickass women. (And you'll be able to sleep at night after reading them!)
If you can't get enough Ghostbusters, I encourage you to get lost in a few funny stories that about teenage magicians, shopping-addicted vampires, spirited (literally...) cheerleaders, and undead boyfriends:
1. The Ghost and the Goth by Stacey Kade
Alona Dare, the high school cheerleading captain and homecoming queen, is tragically run over by a bus. Now, the girl with all the school spirit can't seem to get her spirit out of the school. Enter Will Killian, an outcast who can hear spirits. It just so happens that the two can learn a lot from each other.
2. Undead and Unwed by MaryJanice Davidson
If you're looking for a guilty pleasure romance with a paranormal twist, this is the book for you. Betsy Taylor had a really awful week — and it ended with her dying and becoming a vampire. Her new friends are convinced she's a prophesied vampire princess, but Betsy couldn't care less about the politics of the undead.
3. Ghostgirl by Tonya Hurley
Charlotte Usher, like many high school girls, feels invisible. But then one day, she chokes on a gummy bear, dies, and actually becomes invisible. This quirky novel explores our universal craving to be seen and heard — and it's just as fun as watching Ghostbusters again and again.
4. The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
Maggie Stiefvater is one of my favorite writers. Her Raven Cycle series includes all sorts of paranormal, strange, and fascinating characters. Her series also includes tons of sarcastic humor, witty banter, and teenage adventuring.
5. Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman
Practical Magic is the story of two witchy sisters who grew up haunted by prophesies and bad luck. They're not grown up and they've grown apart, but a dead ex-boyfriend and a whole lot of magic brings them back together. You'll find yourself laughing hysterically at the insane predicaments these two sisters find themselves in.
6. Shadowland by Meg Cabot
Suze is a mediator. In other words, she talks to dead people. And when she moves to her new home in California, she's hoping for a fresh start that will include trips to the mall with friends — instead of trips to the cemetery with ghosts. But when a handsome ghost appears in her bedroom, and another one appears in the halls of her school, she has no choice but to take on the challenge and sort this mess out. And it goes without saying that this book is downright hilarious because Meg Cabot, author of The Princess Diaries, wrote it.
7. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs
This quirky book takes place on a mysterious island and centers upon an abandoned orphanage. It may not seem like it's going to be funny at first — but the main character, Jacob, has an interesting way of looking at life. The spirits that inhabit this story are ones you'll never forget, and it's a paranormal story you'll adore getting sucked into.
