Sorry 'Game Of Thrones' Fans, But This Is Why Kit Harington & Rose Leslie Won't Take A Selfie With You
There's no denying how romantic it is to know that Jon Snow and Ygritte ended up together in real life. So it's no surprise that Game of Thrones fans are excited about the couple. However, Kit Harington and Rose Leslie don't take photos with fans when they're out together for a good reason. Being part of the HBO series means it's hard for them to go anywhere without being recognized. While fans may be excited to spot them, it's important to remember that they're actors who likely spend a great deal of time working. That means the time they have together is valuable, and stopping for pictures isn't part of their plans.
If anything, their philosophy on fan photos should make you love Harington and Leslie's relationship even more. At the root of the policy is a deep respect for each other. In a recent interview with The Guardian, Harington explained why he prefers not to discuss his romantic life in the press. He said,
"I just don't — and I won't say much about it now — but I don't believe in talking about one's relationship in the press because it's…I strongly believe it's her relationship and mine, and anything I say here, she may not want me to say. So I just don't say it. I genuinely think it's our private life."
When it comes to posing for photos, Harington has started setting aside days where he gives himself permission to say no to his fans, whether they like it or not. And he takes an even harder line when he's out with Leslie because he doesn't want people to see them as props.
Harington knows that some fans are disappointed when he says no to a photo, but he told The Guardian,
"But you just have to, otherwise you start feeling like a mannequin. Especially me and Rose, we never do a photo together. Because then it makes our relationship feel like… puppets. Like we're a walking show."
The Game of Thrones couple has been protective of their relationship since they began dating after meeting on the show's set. On occasion, Harington or Leslie will share a story about their romance, but for the most part, they've been committed to keeping that their private life just that — private. For instance, in September, when the couple became engaged, they chose a wonderfully old-fashioned way to make their announcement — they posted a notice in the London Times newspaper.
Even though it's thrilling to see "Jon Snow and Ygritte" together in public, these are two real people who are working hard on maintaining a sense of normalcy in their lives. In the age of selfies, celebrity culture has created this idea that actors, musicians, and any other public figure should be ready to pose at a moments notice. Some celebrities may enjoy the practice, but for others, it can feel like an invasion of their privacy.
Harington and Leslie have drawn a hard line when it comes to posing for photos together, not because they don't appreciate their fans, but because they value and respect each other too much to make their relationship a spectacle. It seems clear that as a couple they've made a decision to put each other first, and that's not selfish, it's admirable. This should only make you adore them more, because it's a rare thing to see a couple — celebrity or not — take such a clear stand in the name of respecting each other's wishes.
Ygritte and Jon were amazing on Game of Thrones, but Leslie and Harington are even better couple in real life because they know that the best way to make their relationship thrive is by keeping it between themselves.
