If you had told me years ago that bras would eventually be the stars of nearly every fashion girl’s outfits, I wouldn’t have believed you. In the past, people had always tried to cover them up; even visible bra straps were faux pas, unless you were living through the ‘90s grunge era. That all changed with the 2020s’ naked dressing mega-trend.

Instead of covering up, fashion’s most daring are ditching their tops altogether, choosing to spotlight their lingerie, while designers are giving brassieres couture updates like intricate embellishments or avant-garde shapes. And, as evidenced by Anne Hathaway’s latest wardrobe choices, the nightwear staple is apparently even more versatile than you ever realized.

Anne’s Elite Layering

Hathaway has turned her Devil Wears Prada 2 press tour into her own mini runway. (I expect nothing less from Andy Sachs.) During the promotion’s Mexico leg on Wednesday, April 1, the actor shared an Instagram Reel that gave a peek into her behind-the-scenes glam. After getting her makeup done, she changed into a few ‘fits, including one that showed the bra in a whole new light.

Styled by Erin Walsh, Hathaway wore a noir Diotima bralette with thick fuzzy straps over a lavender bodysuit. It was tucked into straight-cut high-waisted jeans and cinched with a black belt. For her final touches, Hathaway also wore a boxy blazer and bedazzled pointed-toe shoes, one of spring’s biggest trends.

A Menswear Flair

Though wearing a bra as a top is trendy, it’s also NSFW and not always wearable. Hathaway, however, found a way to address that dilemma.

Apart from the novel idea of layering her bralette over clothes (the antithesis of its more common, skin-focused styling), the Oscar winner’s look also took the bra into menswear territory. Between her jeans and her boxy blazer, her attire had an effortless, borrowed-from-the-boys air. It looked both cool and fresh.

A Must-Try Combo

If you’ve been hesitant to give the NSFW trend a try, Hathaway’s menswear-inspired route is a non-committal way to do it. Consider layering a stretchy bralette over a bodysuit like she did and pairing it with the same elements.

You can also play with other more tailored and oversized items, like layering a triangle bra over a crisp button-down, or pairing a boxy blazer with a more romantic, lacy undergarment.

Runway office-ready.
